CardShark Content - AJ Anderson (4/8/2005)

Honestly, how many of you would truly be worried if a friend of yours told you that they had built a fearsome Turtle deck? Yeah, that’s how the people that I play with felt when I told them that I had built such a deck. That is, until they had their faces smashed in by massive Turtles deserving of their respect…

Ok, here’s a quick background on this deck. One of my Magic buddies made a joke about how I had looked like a turtle once with my coat over my backpack when it was raining. Everyone in our group continued to call me “Turtle” and jokingly mock me. I swore that they would rue the day that they thought turtles were not worthy of respect! Anyway, this was right about the time that Darksteel came out and I saw the Darksteel Colossus

and I knew instantly that I had to build a deck based on getting it out fast and hard. I stumbled across the older combo of Conspiracy

Sorceries and Instants

Not much explanation is needed for the mana acceleration and tutor spells. The mana acceleration is always useful in this deck if you have cards in hand to play. Or you can get whatever you need to help you win the game. The Night’s Whisper also helps speed you along your way to victory at a small price. The deck is slow enough that you’re likely to take some early game damage so I only included one copy of Night’s Whisper. Otherwise I normally play with more copies of it in my other black decks.

is also helpful in dealing with creatures that can prevent damage, regenerate, etc. It’s even more helpful if you just cycle it to do a little bit of damage to a creature and draw a card at the same time. Cycling is neat like that.

Ok, and that’s the mighty Turtle deck. If you hadn’t noticed by reading some of my previous articles, I enjoy taking random ideas and making winning decks out of them. And I am not so humble when I say that this is one of my favorite decks because it is not only fun, but it manages to destroy my opponents on a pretty consistent basis. As with all of my articles, feel free to change whatever you will if you wish to build a version of this deck. It’s not the be-all, end-all dueling deck, it certainly could be improved. But I like it nonetheless. So until next time, keep smashing your opponents with friendly creature types like Squirrels, Faeries and Turtles!
