CardShark Content - Aaron Swersky (10/15/2004)

This is the first in a series of articles to assist the player who has little or no experience in drafting Champions of Kamigawa.

Since the majority of the cards you see in any given draft are commons, we'll be looking at those first. This article will be looking at the White commons in the set, ranking them in terms of playability and assisting you in deciding what's gold, what's decent, and what you shouldn't cast near an open flame.

Please note that this article will strictly be dealing with these cards in a Limited aspect.
While there are some cards that will be excellent in Constructed decks (Distress

In case you're wondering, here is my rating system.
* - Do not draft this card. Ever. There must be something better in that pack!
** - Borderline playable. Never goes into your maindeck on game 1 - sideboard only.
*** - Not bad, good filler for your deck. A good standby, don't be afraid to take this.
**** - Very strong. Take these often, as long as they're in your colors.
***** - Broken. Take these whenever you see them no matter what. Uber-powerful.

Target creature you control gains protection from the color of your choice until end of turn.
Splice onto Arcane (W)
Protection is always a pretty solid ability, and the ability to get it whenever you play an Arcane spell without actually expending a card is pretty strong. There will be times when this pushes a creature through for the kill, and there will be times when it turns a losing blocking situation into a winning one. That being said, there will be times when it's dead; play some, but not more than two or so.

was always a great card to nullify an opponent's creature, but it had the drawback of being ´´stuck´´ to a creature once it's there. Cage is so much better - put it on a threat, then when something nastier comes along, move it over. Draft these or wish you had.

1/1
There's not a whole lot wrong with this creature, but there's not a whole lot right with it, either. Sure, it's 2/2 when it blocks or gets blocked, and only costs one mana. But if your opponent doesn't block it, it's still just a 1/1, and a smart opponent will take a few points from it until he's ready to handle it. Still, that IS a few points, which keeps this from being a card I'd never consider playing.

Soulshift 4

Flying remains as relevant as it ever was, and a 2/3 flying body means that it can stand up to most of the common flyers out there and survive. The added ability of soulshift might well have some effect in your deck, especially if he comes out late (which, at 5 mana, he's bound to do). Worth some real consideration in your deck.

Now, ordinarily, I look at 3/3s for 5 mana and say, ´´ugh.´´ But in a set with so little direct damage, evasion is king...and with all the spirits in this set, giving this guy protection pretty frequently isn't unthinkable by any means. Add in the fact that an Arcane spell doubles in lethalness when it lets KotPR suddenly be protect from the color of the creature it's blocking, and we have a solid 3/3 body.

Now, here's some power. If your opponent doesn't block, he's taking 2 damage a turn minimum. If he does, he's suddenly facing down a 3/3 flyer...and there aren't a lot of flying creatures in this set that can handle that kind of power. Ick. I'm sorry, I'm simply not impressed by this card. Realize that unless you happened to get an Eight-and-a-Half-Tails - which is possible, but highly unlikely - he pretty much sits there and gains 1 life a turn for you. Unimpressive in a set where the white Honden gains you twice as much life a turn and doesn't have the vulnerability of being a creature. Yawn.

simply doesn't make the cut. Definitely a low pick if you're dipping into white, and not even remotely worth a splash.

If you read my Fifth Dawn reviews and look closely at this guy, you'll realize that I'm not a big fan of effects on a creature that only work when the creature dies, unless they're pretty swingy. This is NOT swingy. This is pathetic. Wow, a 1/2 that gains me 2 life when it dies. At least Anodet Lurker

was a 3/3 and had a fair chance of taking something down with it. You can do better than this.

Sorcery - Arcane
Tap up to three target creatures.
See, the problem with this spell is one word in its type. ´´Sorcery´´. This spell was born to be an Instant, cast at the end of your opponent's turn for an explosive finish. More importantly, it would tap down an opposing army that you couldn't handle yet. While this Sorcery version will let you push through for a kill, it won't save your hide if you're in trouble, meaning that its usefulness is limited.

has never been a terribly strong ability. Sure, it's nice when it comes attached to a creature...but do you really want to use a slot in your deck to give it to one of your creatures? I doubt it, making this the weakest creature enchantment.

And there you have it. In my next installment, I'll look at the blue commons from Champions of Kamigawa.
