CardShark Content - Aaron Swersky (11/4/2004)

This is the first in a series of articles to assist the player who has little or no experience in drafting Champions of Kamigawa.

Since the majority of the cards you see in any given draft are commons, we'll be looking at those first. This article will be looking at the Blue commons in the set, ranking them in terms of playability and assisting you in deciding what's gold, what's decent, and what you shouldn't cast near an open flame.

Please note that this article will strictly be dealing with these cards in a Limited aspect.
While there are some cards that will be excellent in Constructed decks (Distress

In case you're wondering, here is my rating system.
* - Do not draft this card. Ever. There must be something better in that pack!
** - Borderline playable. Never goes into your maindeck on game 1 - sideboard only.
*** - Not bad, good filler for your deck. A good standby, don't be afraid to take this.
**** - Very strong. Take these often, as long as they're in your colors.
***** - Broken. Take these whenever you see them no matter what. Uber-powerful.

As blue commons go, it's not bad. It does suffer from the fact that it doesn't naturally have flying, but it makes up for that in surprise value; suddenly, your opponent has to wonder whether or not it's safe to attack with his 2-toughness flyer or not. Even so, if the top card of your library isn't a land, it's a bit weak; play two at most.

Well, the good news is that for only three mana, you get two cards deeper into your deck. The bad news is that it's a Sorcery, so there'll be no playing it at the end of your opponent's turn...which is what everyone always does with cards like Inspiration

Simply put, this guy just isn't all that impressive on the attack. Any opponent with anything resembling a brain will just let him walk right through and take the one singular point of damage. At least he makes a decent blocker; sure, he's gonna die, but at least he replaces himself when he does. Still, just not remarkable. You can do better.

On the one hand, this will often be ´´1U: Counter target spell´´, considering how many spells in Champions of Kamigawa fall into one category or the other. On the other hand, it's also sort of a reactive strategy, and there will be cards that it has no effect on whatsoever. I wouldn't feel too bad about slipping two or three into a deck, though. They'll almost always have a target somewhere.

There just isn't much I can say for this guy. How anxious are you to play a card that costs 4 mana and makes you wait 1 turn to make one of your creatures untargetable, which also dies to 1 point of damage? Only the rancidness of most blue commons in Champions of Kamigawa keeps this from being the worst one in the set.

You could do worse than to slip him into a deck. He makes for a fun little combat trick; let him and another creature block, put damage on the stack, then salvage one of your creatures that's about to die. (Just don't make the newbie mistake of trying to save the Kami itself.) And a 2/2 body isn't utterly unbearable, either. Not a first pick, but not awful.

Here we go. The Soratami are the best (and one of the only) reasons to play blue in Champions limited; in the late game, their abilities can do an awful lot. In this case, he's a good early attacker, and his ability to help you sift through your library isn't half-bad either. Don't play too many (it IS a 1/1), but they're nice to have on your side.

2, Return a land you control to its owner's hand: Target creature with power 2 or less is unblockable this turn.
3/1
Not too shabby, here. A 3/1 flying body is likely to take out almost anything it gets into a fight with, and repeated uses of his ability can push you through for an unblockable kill. You could definitely do worse than to grab one, or even several of these. Just remember that a 1 toughness means that anything that can block it will probably kill it.

Another addition to blue's little flying army, it has the same weakness; 1 toughness means that combat isn't really feasible, unless your opponent is weak on flyers. Still, there's something to be said for the ability to make targeted abilities fizzle on command, and at least it's not stapled to a crummy 1/1 walker. *eyes Hisoka's Guard

Now, this is what I'm talking about! A 3/3 flying body on a common creature isn't all that easy to come by, and its special ability can easily be relevant, untapping your creatures to act as sudden defense or tapping down a prospective blocker. If you're going to commit to blue, track down as many of these as you possibly can.

Now, this card I like. It's easy to slip out threats on turns 1 and 2, especially evasive threats, and have Thoughtbind

ready to stop whatever countermeasure they may have. That kind of tempo advantage can win you the game, but remember...any high-cost bombs are immune to it. Still, I slip a couple into my draft decks whenever I splash blue, just for safety's sake.

And there you have it. In my next installment, I'll look at the black commons from Champions of Kamigawa.
