CardShark Content - Abram Fox (8/11/2005)

Sitting in my office this afternoon attempting to form a solid idea for an article, my mind was drawing blanks. Standard is my cup of tea, I figured, so where better place to start? Now is a fairly stagnant period for Standard. All of the PT: LA qualifiers are Block Constructed and the PT itself is Extended, so past Nationals next week there are no Standard tournaments of any consequence until Champs in November. Most everyone who is preparing for Nationals is keeping their decks under wraps in hopes of surprising the competition so there is a dearth of innovation right now.

Later this month a major format shift will occur in the form of the rotation from Eighth Edition to Ninth Edition. Effective August 20 cards from Eighth Edition are illegal in Standard unless they have been reprinted in Ninth Edition or in the Mirrodin or Kamigawa blocks. For the FNM-level player this could have a varying level of impact on deck selection, from negligible (if you're playing Tooth and Nail

combo decks). In most cases it will result in the change of four to eight slots in a deck. The question at hand is, when the lost cards are major components of a deck, can said deck be rebuilt and remain competitive?

The deck I'm discussing today is a favorite of mine: Beacon Green. The deck accelerates and controls the midgame until it casts a Beacon of Creation

with a card of lesser casting cost, in turn allowing a two-mana accelerant to replace Birds and still cast the main threat on turn four. Since there are no comparable tempo threats in green (and we want to keep this deck mono-colored before sideboarding) the best type of card to fill Plow's slot will be an undercosted beater with a small drawback…green's specialty! has no drawbacks if your opponent is playing Red Deck Wins (RDW) but is a non-factor against artifact-heavy decks including your own. Iwamori is a 5/5 trampler but you can only have one out at a time and allows your opponent to drop a Legendary creature for free. As Legendary creatures are less prevalent in Standard than in Block Iwamori is my choice.

The Legendary status of Iwamori means it’s not usually a good idea to run four in a deck. Therefore, in order to lower the mana count even further we’ll bring the single Troll Ascetic

There you have it. With the introduction of Ninth Edition and loss of Eighth Edition in Standard many players will attempt to plug new cards in their decks to replace old ones without much consideration of the effect. We’ve plugged new cards in here, certainly, but not without a considerable amount of thought. Though we’ll have to wait until after August 20th, my previous experience and current testing suggest that the deck will continue to perform well post-rotation.

If you readers enjoyed the long, thought-out process please let me know. If it’s too tedious then I’ll do my best to get to the decklist and strategy faster. Otherwise, thank you for time and hearing me out. Good luck at your next tournament!
