CardShark Content - Abram Fox (8/26/2005)

Two weekends ago the U.S. Nationals tournament was held in Baltimore, MD. Seeing as how the tournament site was a thirty-minute drive up the Baltimore-Washington Parkway from my house I felt obligated to attend. Due to work I was only able to attend Friday and Saturday, but were those days ever fun and Magic-packed. I decided to spend Friday trading and building my collection for some Constructed tournaments on Saturday.

Arriving at the tournament site around 11 am I quickly set about gauging the trading environment and checking out what the many dealers had to offer. I also checked out the feature match areas. After an hour or two of trading and sightseeing my friend Dan and I decided to enter a Sealed tournament. The main event was still in full swing and I figured Sealed would allow me to play against quality opponents with a level playing field in terms of card pools. There were 33 players in the tournament, the minimum required for six rounds of Swiss. The top 8 players after Swiss would win prizes.

Here’s the card pool I opened…

The next color I realized had to be cut was red. Fumiko is amazing but a few burn spells were not enough to make up for the incredibly mediocre creatures and support spells. In Sealed deck you want red to give you big creatures and lots of burn, not a couple lame weenies and mana accelerants. I did note Yamabushi's Flame

. Aside from those five the rest of white consisted of over-costed stalemate inducing creatures. As the quality of the stalemate-conducive cards in Blue was beyond poor it was likely that no white cards would find a home in my deck.

Starting with green I tried several: G/W, G/B, and G/R. G/W was conflicted between offensive and defensive cards while G/R had absolutely no late-game. G/B is my favorite color combination in CBS draft and looked good, but was short a couple solid playables. I decided to add the aforementioned red splash and go G/B/r.

-A note on splashing in Sealed decks-
Many articles on Sealed deck will advocate splashing a third color in a two-color deck. This is almost always the right choice. Splashing two or three cards of an auxiliary color sacrifices consistency in the name of raw power. To paraphrase former Pro Tour player Chad Ellis, a well-built two-color deck will get you to the top tables while a solid two-color deck with a splash will have the answers that will let you win the whole shebang.

Splashes should always be of cards with a single colored mana in their casting cost, almost always be non-creatures unless they're expensive All-Stars like Keiga or Meloku, and should provide an effect that your other colors cannot provide—splashing red for burn, black for creature removal, blue for bounce, off-color Hondens, etc. Splashing is easier when your deck is base-Green with multiple mana fixers. If you don't have that luxury you probably want to run 18 lands to ensure you get all your colors. It's much easier in CBS Sealed to recover from a land glut than it is from mana screw.

With my colors decided, here's the deck I ran:

is the first card to side out but it's rarely a dead card.

Overall I felt quite bad about my deck, since it lacked no bomb or solid high-end creature. As I told Dan I didn't think the deck could win. I fully expected to go 0-2 drop and be able to play in the free-for-MD-residents Standard tournament (a laptop was the first place prize) later that night. As it turned out I did better than expected…

Round 1: Khair

Khair was the last person seated for the event, well within the time limit but long enough for me to question if he'd show up or not. He looked a bit younger than I and was accompanied by a friend. Both were nice guys though not particularly talkative.

The first game only furthered my fears of a quick exit. I kept a hand with the black Honden, Okina Nightwatch

I felt extremely lucky after winning the first round. My friends reacted with great surprise to my win. I still expected to lose the next round and drop for the laptop tournament

Round 2: Justin

Justin was a young-looking kid with a bit of a bewildered look about him. He seemed just as surprised to be at Table 2 as I was. I did not expect much a fight from him.

Round 3: Cameron

The pairings for Round 3 find Justin and I seated next to each other as I was the lowest seated 2-0 player and he was the highest seated player with a 1-1 record. Neither of our opponents showed up for the start of the round. The head judge walked over after three minutes and gave each of us a game win. Cameron eventually showed up a few minutes before he would have received a match loss, as did Justin's opponent.

The game we did play was an absolute beating. Yet again I parlayed a turn two Budoka Gardener

removed Cameron’s only creature and just like that I was 3-0.

3-0 (5-2)

I felt bad for Cameron as he was clearly panicked and said that he'd misplaced his father's very expensive trade binder and was searching for it. As sympathetic as I felt for his situation there was nothing I could do as the judge had already proclaimed a game loss. At least I dispatched him quickly so he could continue his search. For what it's worth I saw him and his dad later and they did find the cards. Hooray for small miracles.

Round 4: Chad

Chad was a nice guy about my age who sat next to me during the deckbuild. Dan and I helped him build his deck and introduced him to the concept of a mana curve, apparently something foreign to him. His deck was absolute nuts, a B/R concoction with 18 spirits and several Arcane spells including Devouring Greed

Round 6: Jasper

Standings and tiebreakers were posted along with pairings before this round. My fourth round opponent was in first with 15 points and my third and fifth round opponents were tied for third with 12 points each. With 9 points I was tied for 7th place. Due to the quality of my opponents my tiebreakers were ridiculous…I had by far and away the best tiebreakers of everyone with 9 points. Because of the breakdown of players left I still had to win the last round to get into the Top 8. If I did win I was guaranteed to be the highest ranked player with 12 points and would get 5th or 6th place depending on how the players ahead of me finished.

Jasper was a young kid of JSS age. As we shuffled up he noted the fact that only one of us would be able to win prizes. I wished him luck but informed him that I would be the one who walked away with the packs. He laughed and we started the round.

I don’t remember much about this round. I had such an adrenaline high from the pressure that it all blurred together. Our matchup was fairly traditional, B/G “aggro” against U/W “control.” Game one was very close with his Ghostly Prison

took the last five points of his life to give me the victory.

4-2 (7-6)

The victory ensured I would end up with some prize. Chad and Daniel were paired against each other and intentionally drew while Cameron won his last round. As I’d beaten the 2nd place player and lost to the first and third place competitors my tiebreakers were good enough to put me in 5th place, enough to earn me a CBS draft set. Chad walked out with a cool 27 packs. Dan was paired down in the last round and ended up in 9th place despite also having a 4-2 record. All ended well though as Chad sold him a draft set for $5 as repayment for his deckbuilding help.

As I look back on my deck I believe I built it correctly. The Soulless Revival

instead but both are overcosted, sub-par creatures so I feel the Revival was the correct choice. Trying to force red for Fumiko would have been disastrous as the rest of my red card pool was simply not strong enough, even in combination with another color, to allow me to win. B/W is a strong combination in Limited (it won a draft for me the next day) but from the results it appeared I correctly chose to rely on the synergy between Black and Green to carry me to a Top 8 finish.

Thanks for reading my Nationals Sealed deck story. Join me again in a couple of days for my (hopefully shorter) tale of playing in the Grand Prix: Philadelphia trial…my first Legacy games ever! Until then, peace out.
