CardShark Content - Abram Fox (9/6/2005)

When I left off last time I had finished in 5th place and won three packs in a CBS Sealed tournament Friday night at U.S. Nationals. After taking all the kids I gave rides to home I crashed at my house and got a very solid night’s sleep. I woke up at 9 am and picked up Ian and Max, two high-schoolers from my local store who provided a deck in exchange for a ride. The one event I knew I would play in was the 5pm Legacy tournament.

Legacy, aka Type 1.5, can best be described as a budget-friendly version of Type 1. Every set (except the Un- sets) is legal but the banned list is much longer [Editor’s note: the Restriced List from Vintage is all on the Banned List in Legacy], so no Moxen, Lotuses, or any of that jazz. The format is still costly but a fair number of major decks mostly use cards either printed in the past 5 years or easily found. The dual land mana base is the most expensive part but that’s the biggest investment you’ll need.

We got to the tournament site just in time for Max to sign up for a Standard tournament while Ian and I hit up the dealer tables again. I run into a local player, Toby, who’s still in the running for JSS Top 8. He didn’t make it but still won $500, not too shabby for a kid under 15. To pass the time I drafted and split in the finals to win six packs plus the Sicken

I'd like to say I chose to run Gro because of metagame considerations or the raw power of the cards, but really I played it because Ian was playing Vial Goblins and could afford to lend me the necessary (aka good) cards to build the deck. The 28 cards he lent me (Force of Will

This particular deck won a major Legacy tournament, Big Arse II, in July. It seemed simple enough to play as it's pretty much an Odyssey block Threshold deck plus some free counters. was.

I spent the hour before the tournament sleeving my deck, preparing a decklist, and building my sideboard. I play tested against Landstill with Chad, the same guy from my Nationals Sealed deck article. I’d met him the previous day and discovered he was a very nice guy. He saved me from major stress on Friday by picking up my trade binder after I forgot it in my rush to collect the kids I chauffeured that day and leave Baltimore.

The Grand Prix Trial had 55 players and was six rounds of modified Swiss cutting to a Top 8. The prize payout was fairly lame with almost no prize support beyond the Top 2 players getting 3 round byes at GP: Philly and ¾ of a box. I had no delusions about actually making the Top 8 so I didn't care; I was just ready to play a new format.

Jesse was a quiet guy wearing a t-shirt for the 9:30 Club, a local concert venue. I made some small talk and found out he plays at a store across the state border from me, Lucky Frog's in Annandale, VA. It's the major Legacy breeding ground on the East Coast south of Syracuse. Before the round I was more interested in talking to the gentleman on my left. He was a slightly older man with an accent who I’d seen around earlier. When he mentioned that he lost to Eric “Danger” Taylor in the finals of the first Legacy World Championships several years ago I figured he was big-time…turns out he was former Pro-Tour star Alex Shvartsman. While that was cool, I did have a match to play…

Round 2: Troy (Burn)

My next opponent introduced himself and said the Grand Prix Trial was his first Legacy tournament ever. While we shuffled, he made small talk with a player I recognized from my local store so I know Troy had to be fairly good himself. He had the sort of overconfident demeanor that can be a pain to deal with if you let them get away with it.

The first few turns of the first game go slowly as I deal myself a few points of damage through fetchlands while Troy lays Mountain

misplay in game one I never really got my head back in the game. The redundancy of red’s burn spells makes it a difficult matchup and I definitely did not have my A-game this round. Ian, Max, and Chad all lost. Again I hoped that none of them would be paired against me though I would have gladly conceded to Ian so he could keep his Top 8 goals alive.

Round 3: Thomas (Burn)

Thomas was a nice guy who sat catty-corner from me during the first round. He beat the aforementioned Alex Shvartsman fairly handily so I knew I was in for a fight. Thomas seemed fazed by the Legacy atmosphere and metagame, claiming his goal for the tournament was to play basic Mountain

were Thomas’s only must-counter spells, with the rest depending on life totals. Thomas did make a very observant statement about his deck. His argument for playing Burn is that most players don’t know how to manage their life totals and will dig themselves into big holes by not knowing when to counter and when to race.

Both Ian and Chad won while Max lost and dropped to the 1-2 tables with me.

Round 4: Ahmead (Survival)

Sitting down in the 1-2 tables I prepared to regain my honor and return to the ranks of those with .500 win-loss records. The two players on my left and my opponent, Ahmead, were all members of The Source (www.mtgthesource.com) a Legacy forum and good resource for decklists and other information. the turn after that. Ahmead took the dramatic twist quite well considering his last five draws of the game were all lands. I held steady until I reached Threshold and then flew over twice for the win.

2-2 (5-5)

I was quite excited after this round at being back at .500 though I wish the second game had been a bit more interactive. Both Chad and Max had dropped after the previous round to draft while Ian won to put him at 3-1 and still in Top 8 contention. I stayed as I had nothing better to do and didn’t want to spend more money in a side event

Round 5: Richard (Survival)

One thing I noticed during this tournament is that the Legacy player pool skews a good five years older than Standard. Ian and his first round opponent looked to be the only players under 18 and I appeared to be one of the younger players at 21. Richard was in his mid-20s and seemed a little mystified at being out of contention. He said he drove down from New York for this event so I figured he was part of the Syracuse group.

to save a land (he paid the cost) but it was too late. A horde of creatures overwhelmed my Mongooses and took me to zero.

With that my first Legacy tournament was over. I asked Richard to not turn in the match slip until I found the results of Ian’s round. He had board superiority and lost to a topdecked Lightning Bolt

the turn before he would have won, eliminating him from Top 8 contention. We both dropped and got ready to head home.

So what lessons did I learn from this experience? First, Legacy is a fun format with competitive decks for combo, control, and aggro players of all varieties. Second, decks are harder to assemble. I’m not contradicting what I said before about price—in this instance I’m referring to simply finding the cards. Even my mostly-block deck had cards from all twelve years Magic has been in print. Trading won’t be enough—you’ll need to buy cards online to make your deck, no doubt about it. Get used to testing with proxies. Finally, don’t be afraid to go to your opponents (post-round) and other players for advice. I learned a lot regarding match-ups and general strategy by speaking with my opponents after our rounds and by grilling other players after I watched their games. I learned a lot through my wins and even more through my losses. Hopefully the next GPT I play in will go better for me but at least I know I won’t be quite the fish out of water this time.

Legacy GPTs have already begun for Grand Prix Philadelphia and there will be at least one (more if you live on the East Coast) nearby. Go and play if you can or watch if you can’t. You’ll find it to be well worth your time. Thanks for stopping by and good luck in Type 1.5.
