CardShark Content - Abram Fox (11/1/2005)

October is my favorite month of the year—my birthday, the start of the hockey season (Go Caps!), and the first chance to play with the new Magic expansion in tournaments. Ravnica has been very good to me, not so much in terms of winning drafts but in having fun. I can’t say much about how fun this set is to play than hasn’t already been said.

The Ravnica draft series I’m working on has helped improve my Limited game a great deal. It’s one thing to memorize pick orders and another to know why cards are listed in such a way and to have the knowledge and confidence to stray from such lists when the situation calls for it. I look at drafting in a similar light as crafting a work of art. Many great modern artists and musicians were able to create innovative and groundbreaking works because they were classically trained, meaning they knew which rules to break and how to break them. Such is the same in Magic (quite a stretch, isn’t it!). Not that I’m suggesting I’m a Magic genius, because I’m not, but this writing experience has certainly helped improve my understanding of the set and the card interactions therein.

I mention this idea because Ravnica: City of Guilds has a definite structure in terms of color combinations. Red/white (Boros), white/green (Selesnya), green/black (Golgari), and black/blue (Dimir) are the four color combinations of which Ravnica is centered around. The Ravnica designers built the set and planned card interactions with these guilds in mind. Later sets from the block will combine different colors but until February these are the combinations we have to work with. There is certainly nothing wrong with focusing solely on one guild in building a draft deck—that’s what this article does, after all. Understanding guild interactions is the key to understanding how to draft Ravnica.

This article lays out some general concepts for drafting Golgari (G/B) cards, including where in the draft cards should be picked and ideas as to how to best utilize them. When I say Late Pick, I meant 10th-15th, when the chaff usually goes. I only list commons and uncommons since those are the cards you see most often, though I do provide a general outline of the rares at the end of this article. This review is only for a Golgari draft. Some green and black cards have a different value in this archetype than in the Selesnya and Dimir archetypes, respectively. What those cards are will be seen in later articles. Now, on with the cards!

In a Golgari build, black commons will comprise most of your removal and weenie creatures. All in all, I’m pleased with the quality of black’s commons.

Transmute 1BB (1BB, Discard this card: Search your library for a card with the same converted mana cost as this card, reveal it, and put it into your hand. Then shuffle your library. Play only as a sorcery.)

I’m torn over this card. 2/4 for 6 seems very bad and the Transmute ability won’t matter in Limited. On the other hand, the triggered ability destroys Convoke decks and can serve as a finisher. Don’t maindeck it, but don’t forget about it when sideboarding either.

IFZvaWQ= is nasty. Locking down an opponent with this while you go to town is a lot of fun. For you, that is, not so much for them. It negates combat tricks and removes their late-game spells. Not first pick material but will almost always make your deck.

-Golgari Rot-Farm
The common guildlands are considered in this review because you'll likely have the choice of whether or not to play them in your draft. The rare guildlands are not considered because, honestly, if you see one you pick it and you play it (unless it's off-color, in which case you pick it and then trade it). In a slower B/G deck you can run up to even three of these guys, since you won't really miss the loss of tempo when you don't play anything turn two. Aggro decks look at the guildlands less fondly because of that tempo loss. In my drafts these lands have been picked higher than I think they should.

Just as with the black cards, there is less of a difference between the card quality of commons and uncommons than one would hope. Certainly several of these cards are well-documented and you’d certainly run them given the opportunity. Nonetheless nothing particularly game breaking, and as a whole I feel green uncommons aren’t up to the snuff of their black counterparts when it comes to Golgari decks.

A darling of Constructed theorists who see the Caryatid as a three-mana savior for green-based control. It's not too shabby in draft either. The Caryatid stymies most Boros and Selesnya decks for a while and replaces itself. Not for more aggressive decks.

An easy mistake to make with cards like this is to look at the ability, decide it's bad, and move on. It should also be noted that a 3/4 for five is a fair body in Limited. You're not going to look to run this guy but it's nothing to be ashamed about if you do. In a Golgari deck the enchantment-returning ability probably won't matter.

is the only card that does something special in G/B that it wouldn't do in other green decks. Good thing green has so many good commons and multicolored cards that the unexcitingness [Editor’s note: Of course it’s a word!] of the uncommons doesn't much matter. Now, because work is boring and I've got time to kill, here's a list of some rares that might pop up in a Golgari deck. I've listed them in the highly technical categories of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, which may be better titled Highly Playable, Possibly Good, and Unplayable. Remember, these rankings pertain only to a G/B Golgari deck.

I hope this lengthy guide gives you some ideas when it comes to drafting the Golgari guild. I would love to get reader’s opinions as to what was particularly helpful in this article and what was useless. Finally, I’ll let the choice as to the next guild I review be up to you. Email me or post on the boards what you want to see next—Boros, Selesnya, or Dimir. Maybe if you’re nice I’ll even discuss the so-called rogue R/U deck some have drafted to great success. Thanks for taking the time to slog through this opus and good luck in your upcoming Magic events!
