CardShark Content - Abram Fox (11/10/2005)

Another week, another column. I'd like to thank everyone who read last week's Limited Application, especially those who posted on the forums and gave invaluable feedback regarding the article format and card evaluations. Hearing about the experiences of others is just as invaluable as experiencing the same situations in person. For this article we'll be evaluating cards for a Dimir draft deck.

The House Dimir is a library manipulating control guild, compared to the creature and combat-oriented Golgaris. The Dimir have the mechanisms for an alternate win condition—milling—that is actually powerful enough to be worth running in draft. Dimir's guild-specific mechanic, Transmute, is a powerful ability that turns several cards into quasi-tutors, creating more redundancy in the deck and allowing you to run situational cards like Shred Memory

in the maindeck. At the end of this article there's a list of all the cards in Ravnica with Transmute and frequent targets.

Computer problems and stupidity have force me to write most of this article three times over, so forgive me if the text and evaluations seem a bit terse and pithy compared to the verbose and loquacious content of the previous article. Oh, did I mention I'm also studying for the GRE? Gotta work on that vocab!

The theme for blue's commons seem to be 'Defender.' Granted only two cards actually say that but most contribute to a strategy of stalling while drawing cards and countering spells. Consult is a somewhat tricky card to play. Which mode do you choose, to draw or to force discard? My general rule is, unless your opponent has only two cards in hand, draw the cards. Card advantage is priceless in a slow Ravnica draft format. Unless you're playing against a Boros deck, of course.

There are numerous good cards amongst black’s commons for a Dimir deck. I don’t think it’s that hard to reason which cards become better from Golgari to Dimir and which become worse. Black certainly is the most powerful support color in Ravnica right now, something which most likely will not change as more guilds are introduced later on.
