Well, I finally did it – I qualified for the Pro Tour. I mentioned in my last article how my good friend Jason Huang qualified last weekend, and this weekend I managed to do so. Qualifying for the Pro Tour is something I’ve really been wanting to do and have worked at for the past 6-12 months, so to finally reach that goal was very satisfying!

As in all my Limited format reports, I will spend a lot of space discussing how I constructed my sealed deck, followed briefly by how the matches went, followed by a discussion of the Top 8 draft and how it worked out plus some closing remarks. If any of you have requests for more things you’d like to see or things you think I spend too much space on, please just let me know.

Now, everyone has his or her own process for building a sealed deck. What I will do now is describe my particular process, using this card pool and eventual deck as an illustrative example. I STRONGLY encourage you to take the time to figure out how you would build the deck presented above before you read further – that way, you will have something to compare. I do this A LOT and find that it helps me out immensely. I don’t claim that the result I ended up with is the only way or even the absolute best way to build it, but it did serve me pretty well. Also, please do feel free to email me at adam_mba@yahoo.com with any questions or comments on my build – I always appreciate the feedback and am willing to answer specific questions.

The steps I use in constructing a sealed deck are as follows:

1) Sort the cards by color.

2) Separate out the cards into 2 sets – playable and non-playable or marginally playable (with some marginally playable cards being revisited if more cards are really needed or to choose good near-sideboard options).

3) For the playable cards, separate them by creatures vs. non-creatures.

4) Choose 2 main colors and possible splash cards in the other colors.

5) Come to a final decision on the deck composition by laying out the cards by mana cost, with creatures on the bottom and non-creatures on the top, and then cutting/adding cards as needed to come up with 22-23 cards. Ensure that there are enough good early plays (e.g. cards costing less than 4 mana) that I can either apply early pressure to my opponent or at least just stay alive. Add mana and choose near-sideboard cards (e.g. cards most likely to be sided in).

The deck almost chose its own main colors. There was no way Green or White could be a main color – there were just too few good playable cards. Red also didn’t have that many good playable cards. Round 5: WON, vs. Paul Grasshoff. An early Wurm that he had no answer for helped me win Game 1, and the Wurm showed up again Game 2.

Round 6: WON, vs. Will Souza. This match was interesting, as even if I won I wasn’t sure I would make it into the Top 8, as I will explain later. I did manage to win both games relatively easily, as I remember having really good draws.

4-1-1

Now, often 4-1-1 (13 points) is good enough to guarantee making it into the Top 8 in a six-round event. However, this event had close to the maximum number of people for a six-round event (58 out of the maximum of 64). Before the last round, there were 4 people at 13 points – they would all be able to draw in to the Top 8. The rest of the people in contention looked as follows:

Adam (12 points, 62%) vs. Mark (12 points, 53%)
Ryan (12 points, 56%) vs. Alex (12 points, 53%)
Mike (12 points, 55%) vs. Brett (10 points, 43%)
Will (10 points, 49%) vs. Me (10 points, 44%)

Adam and Mark decided to draw in, as they felt their tiebreakers would be good enough to guarantee them both Top 8 if they did so. Alex was not so sure about his chances, though, and so he and Ryan played out their match, which Alex won. So that made 7 people total who would beat me for Top 8. Therefore, I needed not only to win, but also to have Brett beat Mike and then I needed to stay ahead of Brett on tiebreakers. Luckily, that is exactly what happened and I made it in to the Top 8 on tiebreakers by just .9%!

I felt a bit nervous about this draft, as for some reason I just feel more comfortable with Rochester draft than with Booster draft, even though I Booster draft much more often than I Rochester draft at the local card shops. In Booster draft, I always find myself having a tough time figuring out what colors the other people around me are drafting, even if I do feel reasonably confident about being able to cut off colors and tell at least somewhat what colors are being cut off from me.

Anyway, my overall strategy for OD-OD-TOR booster draft consists of the following:

1) Try to go with a 2-color deck if at all possible, but a light splash of a third color is also reasonable.

2) Realize that almost all color combinations are playable, with the possible exceptions of BW (too much need for the graveyard and threshold and not enough ways to get it) and GW (dries up too much in Torment

So, with all of this in mind, I figured my play strategy would just be to quickly beat down the opponent as much as possible in the early game, and then stay alive until one of my finishers showed up.

Well, I kept declaring my attack and he kept stealing my Wurm token with his Chamber, until eventually I had enough cards in my hand to wait for him to steal my Wurm token, then discard to my Desired Mongrel to gain threshold and attack with everything, forcing him to block the Mongrel with all his creatures and letting the rest of my creatures through to do enough damage to kill him.

Finals vs. Adam Lane:

Well, I really wanted the slot to try my hand at the Pro Tour and Adam didn’t care so much (he was also already going to PT Osaka, having come in second at GP Las Vegas), so we agreed to prize split. Adam got $375 and I got $125 and the slot. I thought that was a pretty fair split, as the slot was what I cared about most by far.

Well, I finally had done it – I had qualified for the Pro Tour!!! The funny thing is that just a couple of weeks earlier I had booked a trip to Vegas to play in a PTQ for PT Nice on March 30. Oh well, good thing Southwest lets you cancel trips for full credit. :) Now it’s time to practice, practice, practice booster drafting for PT Nice!
