CardShark Content - Adam Fischer (5/8/2002)

So the big weekend has finally come and gone – my first Pro Tour. All in all, I’m pretty happy with how things went. The short answer to how I did is that I went 8-5-1 with really good tiebreakers (I kept getting paired up), leaving me in 48th place out of the 300 or so competitors. That was good for 5 Pro Tour points (just barely) and $690, which at least paid for the airfare for the trip. :)

Of course, I do wish I had won one more match to give me Top 32 and automatic qualification for Pro Tour Houston, but I’m not complaining. I proved to myself that I could compete at least reasonably well in professional Magic, and hopefully I can do even better next time. Until then, it’s back to the PTQ circuit.

I’ll go into the details of the tournament over this series of four tournament reports (one for each draft), where I plan to go over my draft choices, draft deck, and matches, as well as some random observations and tidbits thrown in. If you have any comments or questions for me, feel free to send me an email at adam_mba@yahoo.com.

PROLOGUE:
---------
As I mentioned in my last tournament report, I qualified for PT Nice way back in February. Luckily, that left lots of time to practice for the big event. And practice I did! I think that this practice was key to my making a respectable showing. I went to the local card shop every chance I had, got together with my good friend Jason Huang who had qualified the weekend before me, talked with other players to exchange thoughts, read as many articles as I could find, and did TONS of practice drafts on Magic Online. Throughout all of this, I made sure to take notes of everything I thought might turn out to be useful, be it good plays, good draft picks, things to watch out for, etc., and referred to these notes frequently in the days leading up to the tournament.

Given that Nice is quite a distance from California, I decided to make a 2-week vacation out of the trip. I stopped off in London for a few days to spend some time with some friends there and then arrived in Nice the Sunday before the tournament (as did Jason) to spend over a week there. My friend Mike Turian joined us on Tuesday and the three of us roomed together. It was quite fun as we got to do some sightseeing and just generally relax in the days before the tournament.

OK, enough of the non-Magic stuff – now on to the event itself! For those of you who don’t know, the tournament was structured as follows. There were about 300 players. On Day 1, there were 2 booster drafts. The first draft was followed by 4 rounds of play within your 8-person draft pod. Then, players were separated into new 8-person draft pods based on their records. We then played 3 rounds after this second draft. All players with a 4-2-1 (13 points) or better record then advanced to Day 2. Day 2 followed exactly the same format as Day 1. At the end of Day 2, the Top 8 players, based on their records throughout both days, were selected to compete in the Top 8 on Day 3.

DRAFT #1:
---------
My overall strategy for OD-OD-TOR booster draft consists of the following:
1) I try to go with a 2-color deck if at all possible, but a light splash (1-4 cards) of a third color is also reasonable.
2) I realize that almost all color combinations are playable, with the possible exceptions of GW (dries up too much in Torment

), RW (conflicting cards of aggressive and defensive natures), and UR (tough to get good ground defense).
3) I try to keep my options open as long as possible by not committing too deeply too early to TWO different colors.
4) If I go White or, to a lesser extent, Green, I try to TOTALLY cut off these colors early and hard so that they will come back to me in the second pack, since most of the good White and Green cards come in Odyssey as opposed to Torment

5) I try not to go into Black right away, because since it’s strongest in the third (Torment

) pack, it is not as important to cut it off and instead is much more important to determine if it’s being drafted heavily to my right. I’ll go into it after the first few picks if it seems like I’m getting passed a lot of good Black cards.
6) I pay particular attention to what colors I’m getting strong cards passed to me in, and look to add or, if need be, switch into those colors.
7) To a lesser extent, I pay attention to what colors I’m passing good cards in, and try to stay away from these colors.
8) Be sure to keep things like mana curve, creature count, removal count, etc. in mind as I draft.

Now, one particularly interesting thing about this draft is that I was sitting to the right of Zvi Mowshowitz. As some of you may know, Zvi decided to declare in advance of the event as well as at the event that he would be drafting White. At the event, he was wearing a T-shirt with a picture of Teroh’s Faithful on the front with an arrow pointing to the White mana symbol and handwritten words saying “Hint, Hint.” The back of his shirt said “All the drafters say I’m pretty fly for a White guy.” Even though I was feeding Zvi for 2 of the 3 packs, given the lack of depth in White I determined it would not be worth it to fight with him for the color so I planned to avoid it if at all possible.

My picks in the draft went as follows:

Now, up until this point I was basically BG with the exception of the Missile when there was nothing better. But I felt that getting this card SO late was a pretty good signal that the person to my right wasn’t drafting U. Also, I really hadn’t gotten any good G cards after the first couple, so I thought he was in G, leading me to think strongly about making that switch into UBg or straight UB. seemed like a good signal to go B, but my guess is that the person to my right started by picking mostly G cards and switched into B later. That left UR wide open for the taking, and in fact I saw lots of good R cards. The trick is that I don’t have much experience drafting UR and from talking with people and reading articles it seems like a very tricky archetype to get to work. U was definitely the right call, though, as good cards in that color kept coming.

Building a draft deck is usually pretty easy, with the only real choices being what, if anything, to splash and what the last few cards are. The main things I try to keep in mind while putting the deck together are:
- Keeping a good mana curve, with not too many (hopefully no more than half) of the cards costing 4 or more mana
- Having enough creatures – ideally 12 or more, though this varies depending on the deck type
- Balancing color requirements

Building this deck was really easy – I felt that the Roar was too good a splash to pass up, especially with my search and discard outlets. The final draft deck looked as follows:

NOTES AND WHAT I WOULD HAVE DONE DIFFERENTLY?:
----------------------------------------------
The deck had 15 creatures, which was more than enough. The 11 spells with casting cost 4 or more was a bit on the high side, so I went with 18 land. I was QUITE happy about this deck and its potential, given all the bombs and strong cards it had. The one thing I would have considered changing in the deck would be to play the Filthy Cur

over the Aristocrat. I initially didn’t want to play the Cur since my deck was more controlling, but as Zvi pointed out after my first match, the Cur does help the deck stay alive in the early game (albeit at a potential cost) and can help set up an early Standstill

I was quite happy going 3-1 in my first Pro Tour draft, though to be fair I think I got incredibly lucky in getting such good cards and drawing Aboshan so often. On to the draft #2 in the second part of my report (to be posted tomorrow).
