There was no good B or W in this pack and I was already toying with the idea of splashing U or else going UW and splashing the Demises. It was interesting because so late in this draft, even though I had decided on going some combination of B, U and W, any one of them could have been a splash.

Hmmm . . . I seemed to be a bit all over the place in terms of colors, but I’m really not that sure what I could have done better. Possibly RW would have been more open, but that is a combination I’m not too fond of.

I ended up making W the splash color, as I felt many of its cards were more easily splashable and the ones that weren’t were not essential. The final draft deck looked as follows:

. However, I did have THREE Demises and a lot of fliers to beat down with. It turned out that my deck was very much a “beatdown”-type deck, a strange thing indeed for UBw. 13 creatures was just fine, and the 3 Demises made for some very cheap removal.

Round 12: WON, vs. Andrea Santin playing BGu. Game 1 I had a super-quick draw and just kept laying out creature after creature and beating him with a 3/1 Aquamoeba

I was now pretty much guaranteed of Top 64, and if I won the next match I would make Top 32!

Round 14: LOST, vs. William Jensen playing RG. This match was selected to be a feature match! It turns out that the reason was that Mark Rosewater apparently got some names mixed up and thought I was some little kid from Alaska and thought it would be fun to feature me playing the great William Jensen. Imagine his surprise when I turned out to be one of the older players. :) Anyway, getting to play at the feature match table was great, and it somehow didn’t make me nervous at all. Also, my friends Oliver and Keith who were visiting from London came in at this time and were able to watch the whole match which was fun. Unfortunately, this was the one Round 14 feature match that was not covered by the Sideboard. Anyway, Game 1 didn’t get off to a very good start as I had to double-mulligan. William then cast a Roar of the Wurm

WRAP-UP:

So, I was pretty sure I had made Top 64, and throughout the tournament my tie-breakers were pretty good as I got paired up at least twice, and then got paired up again with William Jensen in the last round. Sure enough, I ended up near the top of the 8-5-1s, at 48th place, which was just enough for the 5th Pro Tour point and netted $690. Also, my friends Eugene Harvey

and Jason Huang both made Top 64 as well! I must say I came away from the tournament feeling quite good about my performance, even if I do have to go to the PTQs to try to qualify for PT Houston.

One things that is a bit interesting is that I drafted B as a main color every time and drafted U to one extent or another every time, and never drafted G or R in a serious way. I didn’t set out to do anything like that, but it just turned out that way.

In the hope that it helps, I’d like to mention just a few of the lessons I learned that others might find useful:
- Practice as much as possible
- Pay attention to good plays you see as well as bad plays you see or make
- Think about what you could have done differently or better
- Take notes of everything you might find useful; refer to these notes often
- Find other good players with whom you can discuss strategy and then do so
- Don’t get rattled by anything, particularly by another player’s reputation or play skill – everyone make mistakes

Finally, I don’t usually do this, but in this case I want to make sure to give props to several people who greatly deserve it:
- Jason Huang, my good friend, local practicing partner and fellow Pro Tour rookie, who made everything so much more fun – Magic and otherwise.
- Mike Turian and Eugene Harvey

, two accomplished Pros and a couple of the nicest guys I’ve met who have given me countless pieces of good advice over the past 7 months and have become good friends in the process.
- Paul Sottosanti, who has provided all kinds of help over the last 7 months and who I am really looking forward to teaming with (along with Jason) for the team season.
- Sol Malka, whom I just met at the tournament but who ended up providing all kinds of encouragement. I knew he was a top player, but I didn’t know he was also so nice of a guy.
- My friends from high school Oliver and Keith, who I hung out with in London before the tournament and who came down to Nice to hang out and root for me.
- The folks at CardShark for being behind me all the way.
- My girlfriend Rachelle, who has been extremely understanding about this game she’s not really into and the time I spend on it. It was really good to have her support even though she couldn’t make it to Nice.

Until next time (hopefully)!
