DAY 2:
---------

Unfortunately, Day 1 didn’t finish until after 2:00am and Day 2 was starting at 8:30am. We were all a bit pumped up from the excitement and had trouble going to sleep, plus we needed to discuss our drafting strategy. All of this together meant that we were only able to get about 4 hours of sleep, which if I could somehow change one thing going into the day, that would be it – I felt the effects of little sleep throughout the day and think my play suffered from it.

As for the drafting strategy, we had talked a little but about this before. I had made Day 2 at team GP Columbus so had done some team Invasion Block drafting, but Paul was the only one with experience Odyssey Block team drafting, which he had done with the other CMU guys several times. Thus, since he was the most experienced in the format, we had decided before Day 1 that he would be in the B Seat in the middle and he would coordinate the drafting between the three of us. Of course, Jason and I would make our own picks and would be responsible for knowing the details of our decks and the decks of our opponents, but Paul would provide the overall guidance as to colors and also suggest individual picks where appropriate. All of this had to be done non-verbally through pointing and gestures according to the DCI rules.

In terms of colors, we basically determined to do a blend of drafting the colors where they are strongest (i.e. G and W on the left for Odyssey and Judgment and B on the right for Torment

) and metagaming, where we would pick colors that were good against what our opponents were drafting (e.g. B against W, W against G, R against B, etc.). There was in fact a lot of metagaming that most of the teams were doing, so needless to say, each draft involved a “dance” of sorts with people shifting in and out of colors to try and get the best position vs. their opponent.

ROUND 9 (Draft #1) vs. Team Jokas:

Team Record: 8-0-2. So most likely we were now in the top 4, but we needed to see the standings and pairings to be sure of it.

ROUND 11 (Draft #3 vs. Team Lovespell):
---------------------------------------
After looking at the standings and pairings, we saw that we were at 26 points, Lovespell was at 25 with the highest tie-breakers, 2 other 25s were paired, and 2 24s were paired. Everyone else was at 22 or less so we were guaranteed Top 4 no matter what – even if we lost this match! However, we really wanted to take a bit of a break to rest up for the top 4, so when Lovespell offered us the intentional draw, we took it. We did get to take what would have been our draft packs, though. In fact, I looked at my Torment

– and since I was in the C Seat, we would have gotten 3 picks in a row out of it before our opponents got any! Oh well, who knows what else would have happened and we needed the break.
Team Record: 8-0-3. Undefeated in the Swiss!!!

SEMI-FINALS vs. Team Illuminati:
--------------------------------
Given that these were the semi-finals, I’ll provide a bit more detail. :) During the last round, we had looked around at what colors people on the different teams were playing and saw the following:

Seat A: BW, RW, BW, RW - W with either B or R
Seat B: RGwu, BGw, BR, BU - B and sometimes G
Seat C: BUr, BU, UG, BG - B and U and sometimes G

This seemed to be opposite in a lot of ways to where colors were good in the various packs, with Seat A wanting B and not W or G, Seat B being flexible, and Seat C wanting G and W and not B. However, it was also consistent with what we had experienced and done ourselves in previous drafts – the drafting was more about metagaming to have a good matchup against your opponent than it was about setting yourself up to best draft the strongest cards in the various colors. So, we just went in with the plan to “do the metagame dance.”

Draft Portion:
--------------
Justin Gary was in the A seat, Zvi Moshowitz was in the B seat and Alex Shvartsman was in the C seat. We won the coin toss and chose for them to start the draft.

You can read Sideboard’s great and detailed coverage of the draft at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=sideboard/gpnj02/t4draft2, although there are a few corrections to the details. I’m pretty sure I never took an Aven Flock

as it’s reported, and as you can see it wasn’t on my decklist. I think that to start off, once I saw him take a W card, I took a B card, trying to position myself for a good matchup.

As the draft began, it was clear that Alex was going heavy W, and it looked like he might also be going into U but it wasn’t clear. To counter that, I was picking up B cards. Meanwhile, Zvi was picking up G cards and looked to be going either GR or GU, and so Paul was looking to build a UW deck to counter that strategy. Meanwhile, Jason was picking up R with an eye towards RG or RB while Justin was looking to go BR. Well, we couldn’t have just me and Justin as the only B mages at the table, because that would leave Justin with FIVE first-picks at B in Torment

! So Jason had to go RB. That mean that I was the only one left to take G, and while G is usually at a disadvantage vs. W, there wasn’t much I could do and I was aiming to have my B cards compensate.

For my Odyssey pack, the 5th pack overall in the draft, I opened up a true bomb – Kirtar’s Wrath. Unfortunately I wasn’t in W but I had to take it as we had to counterdraft it plus there wasn’t anything amazing in my colors. This was a tough situation, and I thought briefly about playing W due to this bomb, but realized there wasn’t a good way to make it work. Paul was UW pretty solidly and Jason was going BR so if I went into W it would either have to be BW, which would mean someone would have to draft G by either:

a) Jason going GR, but this would have left Justin FIVE first picks in B in Torment

b) Paul switching into UG and having a lot of his W picks go to waste.

I also maybe could have gone GW, but I'm really not a fan of that archetype.

As things progressed, Justin stayed in RB, Zvi ended up going into GU, while Alex dipped into B, but he was still mostly W. I stayed GB and Paul stayed UW. Unfortunately, Alex’s deck was looking VERY strong against me, with 2 Resilient Wanderer

! I figured I would just load up on B and create these huge guys that would be able to push their way through. Jason dipped into G for some fatties to counter Justin’s RB deck, but unfortunately I didn’t know this and thought he was just counter-drafting. Thus, I raised my eyebrows a few times when he took cards that I thought I could use better, but luckily Paul was directing everything and I trusted him, and things did in fact go as planned.

As we built our decks, we all agreed that Paul likely had the advantage over Zvi, Jason’s match would be about even, and mine would be really tough.

Matches:
--------
As with the draft portion, you can read Sideboard’s great and detailed coverage of the matches at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=sideboard/gpnj02/sf2. Basically, Jason won his match and to our surprise Paul lost his match due in large part to him running into a bad case of color-screw, although Zvi felt that the match was tough for Paul to begin with. Both those matches were over pretty quickly, well before Alex and I had even come close to finishing our first game! In was all up to our match! However, Alex and I were engaging in lots of friendly banter and it was quite fun and casual despite the high stakes.

In Game 1 I started off strong with a Mongrel and though about putting Shade’s Form on it but decided my mana was better spent playing more guys first; plus I didn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket. This was a good thing as the Mongrel got hit with Kirtar’s Desire. The Shade’s Form came in really key on a Krosan Archer

to foil that plan.

So unfortunately our team lost that match and our long run was ended – but we were still quite happy to have made it so far!

------
RECAP:
------
Lovespell also lost their Semi-Final match, and since we were higher than them at the end of the Swiss, we ended up in 3rd Place as opposed to 4th. We were all extremely pleased with how well we had done. We had come to New Jersey with the goal of just qualifying for Pro Tour Boston, which we figured would require around a 17th-place finish (based on how far the 4th slot passed down at the team GP in Columbus last year). Instead, we not only qualified for the Pro Tour, but we were undefeated throughout the swiss portion, made Top 4, won $700 each, got 2 more PT points, and had a great time!

I’d like to give props to my teammates Jason and Paul for doing an awesome job – it was a true team effort and I don’t think any of us could have done it without the help of the others. I’d also like to give props to Mike Turian and Eugene Harvey

for introducing me to Paul and also for providing continual advice and guidance in Magic.

Next up I plan to practice with Jason and Paul for PT Boston (Jason and I are working on getting Paul to come out to the San Francisco area or going down to San Diego when he might be there) as well as try and qualify for PT Houston. Now that I’ll be going to my second Pro Tour in a row and will have at least 9 PT points after Boston – and hopefully more if we do well in Boston – I’m really hoping to get the 20 PT points within a year to get on the “gravy train.” That goal now seems a lot closer than it did before.

In the meantime, if there’s anyone in the San Francisco area who would like to practice team drafting for PT Boston, feel free to email me!
