CardShark Content - Adam Fischer (7/14/2002)

Originally, I was planning on playing in the team PTQ at Origins on the Friday, but since I was fortunate enough to qualify at GP New Jersey, I decided to play in the Peasant Magic tournament instead which I was really looking forward to. However, as I had not really prepared any Peasant decks, I had to rely on getting a deck from my good friend and fellow CardShark writer Johnny Lai, who I consider one of the leading experts on the Peasant format.

For those of you who don’t know, Peasant Magic is a non-sanctioned format that allows the use of ANY card (even Unglued or banned/restricted cards), with the only restriction being that there can be no rare cards and at most 5 uncommon cards between the main deck and the sideboard. Also, the rarity of a card is considered to be the rarity of the most common version of the card – so if a card was ever printed as a common, even if it later became an uncommon or a rare, it is considered a common. For the tournament at Origins, these rules were modified somewhat in two ways:

1) The restrictions for Type I with regards to banned or restricted sets and cards were followed
2) The most restrictive rarity designation was used for a card

Anyway, after discussing things with Johnny and looking through his decks, I decided to play a mono-Black deck he had designed. I made some tweaks to the deck so that it adhered to the modified Peasant rules and put together a sideboard, in consultation with Johnny, and came up with the following deck:

s were good at surviving against Sligh and got around Pro-Black creatures and circles. The Rats worked well against either control or Sligh, usually being able to both take out a burn spell and trade with a creature. The Stenches were probably the MVP of the Sideboard, and if I were to do it again I would use 4 of them, possibly even main-decking some. They knocked out most creatures in the format, including pesky pro-black ones. The Hungers helped the deck survive against Sligh, and the Terror

The deck list above is probably not as good as it could have been, but given the last-minute changes that had to made due to the modification of the Peasant Magic rules for the Origins tournament, I felt it was a pretty good deck and Johnny agreed.

MATCHES:
OK, now on to the matches. As before, I’ll talk about what decks I faced as well as the interesting highlights. I think there were 20-something players, and it was announced that there would be 5 rounds of swiss followed by a cut to the top 8. Unfortunately, since CardShark was sponsoring the event, I was not eligible for any prizes, so I was just playing for pride. :) Also, I apologize, but I lost some of my match notes so I may have gotten a few details mixed up and may be lacking some details about certain matches.

Match 1 vs. Sam Fischbach playing Sligh:

Match 2 vs. Man “Sandy” Tsoi playing Mono-B discard:

I lost 0-2. I lost Game 1 in a close battle, and in Game 2 I ended up drawing about 12 land out of 20 cards and lost.
Match Record: 1-1

Match 3 vs. Mono-B:

I don’t have too much information about this match, but I recall just eventually winning the “war of attrition” that is common in the Black-on-Black matchup.

Match Record: 2-1

Match 4 vs. Mono-W:

This was a tough matchup, as he had all kinds of pro-black creatures – some in the main deck and even more in his sideboard. Anyway, the MVPs in the main deck were the shadow creatures which were able to slip by and the MVP by far after sideboarding was Stench of Decay

Semifinals vs. Sligh:

This was a tight match. Unfortunately I lost my notes, but I still remember this match – I just wish I could remember my opponent’s name. I have to give him credit, though, because not only did he end up beating me and making the finals, but he did so without a sideboard!!!! Anyway, here’s how the games went:

In Game 1, I eventually stabilized and had the upper hand on the board, beating him down with shadow creatures with a Desert

In Game 3 a similar thing happened. I was at 9 life and I had the option of Draining him one turn for around 2 or the next turn for like 4. He had around 15 life, but I was beating him down with a War Beast

So I ended up in the Top 4, which I was quite happy with. Plus, the tournament was a blast! I would like to give the folks at CardShark lots of credit for running it – and hopefully some of you can play in the next one at GenCon! I would also of course like to thank Johnny Lai again for giving me the deck to play, and would like to congratulate him on making Top 8 in the tournament.
