CardShark Content - Adam Fischer (8/14/2002)

Originally, I wasn’t going to go to Gen Con, as sometimes all the plane flights (which, living in California, most all big events require) can get tiring. However, all the CardShark folks were going and I couldn’t pass up the multiple Grand Prix Trials and PTQs that were being held, so in the end I found my standard sub-$300 plane fare and went.

So the main task was deciding what deck to play. UG Quiet Roar Threshold worked well for me at the PTQ at Origins, but from seeing the metagame results of various events, it seemed UG and mono-B were all over the place and would be quite expected. So, I wanted to play a deck that would be perhaps a bit less expected, but that would still be Tier-1 and perform well against UG and mono-B.

I continued my research on decks talked about on the Internet, talked strategy with many people, both on- and offline, and playtested both on my own (with Magic Suitcase) and with other people. I tried many different decks (in fact at last count I had 14 different OBC decks built) and refined and overhauled several of them. Since I had lots of time (4 weeks) between the previous OBC event and this one, I tried out some more unconventional ideas as well as the more conventional ones. None of the unconventional ideas seemed quite solid enough, though I am still testing them, so in the time right before Gen Con I focused my attention to the more proven decks.

Eventually, I decided on playing GW. The reasons for this were several:

1) It had made some good performances but wasn’t "all over the place" to the extent UG and mono-B were.

2) Jarrod Bright had posted a great article on Brainburst which talked about his favorable testing results with the deck.

3) I had also shown good testing results with the deck, with it going 50-60% vs. UG and 70% or so vs. mono-B.

4) It had lots of good sideboarding options.

In coming up with the final decklist, I started by looking at the lists of those GW decks that had done well at recent events and comparing what cards they used. I do this exercise often in coming up with constructed decks, and find it helps. Besides, I feel my strength is in analysis as opposed to creation. Here is what I came up with for the pre-existing versions of GW:

es or not, as this drastically affected sideboarding choices.

When selecting and tweaking a deck, I often like using an analysis such as this, but it’s not wise to rely on it alone. First of all, a deck is composed of cards that work together as a whole, not just as individual good cards. The number of one card used should affect the number of other cards used, as some cards work well together, shall a similar purpose, occupy various points on the mana curve, etc. Secondly, it’s important to playtest a deck yourself and see what works and what doesn’t, try different cards that may not have even been in the previous decks, etc. Finally, the metagame is constantly shifting and so the deck should be adjusted to take that into account.

So, with that in mind, I playtested the deck quite a bit, both with other people as well as on my own with Magic Suitcase. I came up with the following results:

- Tireless Tribe

. I resisted this at first, refusing to believe that the Tribe could be a "good" card, but it really is in this case. The Hound doesn’t really affect the board much, so at the most it occasionally gets through for one more point of damage, but even that doesn’t happen all that often as it is easily blocked. The Tribe, on the other hand, is great at surviving Mutilate

sort of counts as a two-drop since pumping it is an option, so the deck kind of has 8 one-drops and 8 two-drops with the Tribe, which is much better than 4 one-drops and 12 two-drops with the Hounds.

MATCHES:

Match 1 vs. Paul Cotts playing BR:

This is a pretty easy matchup for me to begin with, and I just got a very aggressive draw both games and finished him off relatively quickly.

Match Record: 1-0

Match 2 vs. David Guggenheim playing RG:

Unfortunately I don’t remember too much about this match and my notes are sketchy, but I think I won rather easily, never falling below 12 life either game.

Match Record: 2-0

Match 3 vs. Jeff Bernard playing Mono-B Control:

In game 1 I got him down to 5 life. At one point, I have a Brushhopper on the table with another one as the only card in my hand. He had no creatures out and I attacked with the Brushhopper, bringing him to 2 life. I then debated whether or not to cast the other Brushhopper. I’m better off casting it if he plays a creature or casts Edict or Innocent Blood

but realizing that it would take me longer to win the game if he casts a creature or Edict. Well, unfortunately he cast a Shade and then cast Edict the next turn after I played out the other Brushhopper, and he was able to take control and win the game. In retrospect I think I should have cast the other Brushhopper right away, as it’s much less likely to be the wrong call, and even though it screws me more right away if he does have the answer, he dies the next turn if he doesn’t. RECAP:

Again, due to intentionally drawing twice, I was able to get a good view of the metagame and am working a new article that will have lots of statistics about the OBC metagame from the time after Origins all the way through Gen Con. The article should be up on CardShark shortly.

There are many people I’d like to thank for their help in preparing for this tournament:

- Arthur Pruyn, for help playtesting OBC in general, particularly this deck, and also for good discussions on card choices

- Eric Shen, Jason Huang, and Ryan Reynolds, for additional help in playtesting OBC

- Alan McCandless, for additional last-minute playtesting and decklist assistance

- Everyone at CardShark, for their help and support

As always, please feel free to email me with any comments or questions.
