CardShark Content - Adam Fischer (8/18/2002)

This report really begins with the previous day’s Grand Prix Cleveland Trial. In the Quarterfinals of that event, I lost to a UG Quiet Roar deck. Let me correct that: I got TROUNCED by a UG Quiet Roar deck. But this wasn’t just any Quiet Roar deck – it used some cards that were different from what I had seen before and cards that seemed to work surprisingly well. It seemed to be a threshold variant of Quiet Roar, similar to the deck that I played to the finals of the PTQ at Origins, but with two major additions:

could often attack on turn 4 WITH THRESHOLD. And with the Fates, 4 bears could often be brought into play on turn 4. That’s 8 points of damages that can’t be Edicted or Blooded away. Plus, the deck rarely seemed to run out of things to do, between the cards in its hand and all the flashback cards in its graveyard.

Now, I was happy with my GW deck, but I felt this new deck had a lot of potential. It seemed like my PTQ Origins Finals deck, only better. It was new and aspects would likely not be expected. So I asked Valentin, who played it against me, if I could see the deck.

No such luck.

Apparently, there was a whole group of maybe 5-6 players that Valentin was part of that had discovered the deck and who had been testing it. The story goes as follows:
- The deck is originally credited, as far as I know, to Seth Burn, who played it to a 5-2 finish at a PTQ in Boston
- Ben Peli, part of the group that ended up bringing the deck to Gen Con, overheard Seth talking about the deck at the PTQ and took notes on it
- Ben and Valentin and others in the group tested the deck the week before Gen Con and they all decided to play it there
They wanted to keep the deck under wraps as long as possible, and there was a PTQ the next day in which they wanted to use it, which is why they didn’t want to fully reveal its contents yet. That was understandable. However, since I did like the deck, I watched Valentin play it in his next matches (I believe it made it to the finals of the GPT) so I could get a better feel for how it worked and what some of the key cards were.

The GPT didn’t finish until about 1:00am, but the PTQ the next day wasn’t until 5:00pm so I had some time to prepare and think about it. I first made out a decklist of what I thought Valentin was playing, and I came up with the following:

I then refined this decklist, created a version in Magic Suitcase on my laptop, played some quick test games with it, and refined and optimized it some more. Since the deck had been working so well for Valentin’s group (one of them also made Top 8 with it at the PTQ earlier that day) and they had said they spent a lot of time working on it, I didn’t want to change it too drastically, but then again I didn’t think it needed to be changed too much, as it was quite good. In any event, I arrived at the following build that I used in the PTQ:

These turned out to be KEY, especially the Garden. The deck is kind of mana-intensive, so I don't think it can stand too much pain, but with all the search it has, it often found the one copy of each when it needed them. Also, the land amount seems right, but sometimes (10-15% of the time or so as it turned out) the deck had some trouble finding Green mana and so maybe it needs to add a Forest

As I later found out, there was actually some discussion amongst the other players who played this deck as to whether one or more Mongrels should be cut. While I don’t agree with that, compared with the other cards in the deck, the Mongrel did sometimes seem unimpressive, and I occasionally sided one out. All that said, Mongrel is still Mongrel. :)

es were a bit too slow due to their cost (it costs 4 and usually 5 mana to both cast the Wish and what the Wish grabbed). However, in watching the deck being played, it seemed that the deck had plenty of mana and the Wishes came in quite useful. That said, I definitely didn’t think more than 2 of them were warranted. In fact, after playing with them throughout the tournament, I found my initial gut instinct was right and I did find the Wishes rather slow. In fact, they were never key for me all day. Plus, they always came out after sideboarding for the instants that were good in that particular matchup.

SIDEBOARD:
9) 2 Moment’s Peace:
These were key against Quiet Roar and especially against even more aggressive decks such as GW or WW. Plus, they could be Speculated for.

This is EASILY the most controversial sideboard choice. When I told friends about the deck, they always asked about this card. In fact, I myself questioned the card when I saw Valentin sideboard it in against mono-B. However, after seeing it in action and playing with it numerous times, I am a convert. Basically, against mono-B, most if not all of the deck’s mana creatures die, and the deck does run light on land and can be mana-intensive with the Fates and all. So, Far Wanderings

This was so huge I’m tempted to try to fit another one in the deck. Mono-B’s only sort-of answer to it is Echoes, and even that isn’t perfect. This deck quickly gets fuel for the Bears.

SIDEBOARDING STRATEGY:
As I try to do before any major constructed tournament, I created a “sideboarding chart” for the deck. I first use it to fine-tune the deck list and make sure I wasn’t over- or under-sideboarding against any major deck. I also use it to think about in advance what I would sideboard in and, equally as important but often neglected, what I would sideboard out. I don’t necessarily always hold exactly to this chart, as each deck is slightly different and other factors come into play, but I do try to use it as a starting point and a guide. My sideboarding chart for this deck against the major decks I expected to face looked as follows:

OK, now on to the matches. I should mention that even though I had worked on this deck and tested it as much as possible in between the GPT the night before and the PTQ, that still wasn’t a lot of time with it and I was quite nervous about going with a deck that I hadn’t had as much experience with. In fact, up until right before the tournament I was still debating whether or not to just stick with my GW deck. However, I realized that this deck really wasn’t all that different from my Origins PTQ deck, and I really did like how it worked. So, in the end, I bit the bullet and went for it.

As before, I’ll talk about what decks I faced as well as the interesting highlights. There were 93 players, so it was announced that there would be 7 rounds of swiss followed by a cut to the top 8. Since the tournament started at 5:30pm, this meant we were in for a late night . . . (sounds familiar from Origins).

Donald was part of the group that brought this deck to Gen Con, so even though I hadn’t used his decklist, I had taken several elements from it and our decks were virtually identical. Also, I had recently played Donald in the Quarterfinals of the PTQ at Origins, so we sort of knew each other. In any event, I remember this match as being one of the more fun ones in terms of the banter. In Game 1, he stalled me by casting Cunning Wish

ROUND 6 vs. Stephen Berrios playing Bu:
As I was 5-0 at this point, I wanted to draw. The main reason was that two draws would guarantee top 8 and a loss and a draw would also essentially guarantee it. However, if I lost this round and then got paired down with someone the next round who didn’t want to draw and I lost again, I might not make top 8. Stephen was in the same situation, but when I offered him the draw he declined. We played game 1 and I had a good draw while he had a poor one so I demolished him. I offered him the draw again and this time he took it. :)
Match Record: 5-0-1

We are both at 5-0-1, so we I.D. to ensure ourselves places in the top 8.

QUARTERFINALS vs. Michael Bernat playing Mono-B Control:
Despite the pressure, this was actually a very fun, relaxed match. Perhaps because of the late hour, perhaps just because, we both elected to play “loose” which meant that we could do things like tap and then untap lands as long as we didn’t do anything in between.

SEMIFINALS vs. Stephen Berrios playing Bu:
So, it was a rematch of the Round 6 that we almost played out! At this point my friend Marcus Anderson, esteemed editor of CardShark, came by and watched and it was cool to have his support. Game 1 was probably one of the most amazing games I’ve ever played. I’ll try to recount the details, but I may have gotten some things wrong, as it was rather late (about 3am) and I was concentrating on playing, of course. :) Basically, he got the “god draw” of Fiend, Rancid Earth

before casting Braids, leaving my board at just 2 islands with Braids’ ability on the stack. At this point, Stephen asked me, quite seriously, if I’d like to concede. I actually considered it as I saw no likely way out of this predicament, but of course I was going to do my best anyway no matter what. I’ve definitely learned that when it comes to Magic, it often pays to just never give up. The perfect card or cards might come up, or your opponent might make a critical mistake, or many other things could happen.

is a big blocker, as is a Mongrel with many cards in hand. On my turn I sacrificed the Mongrel and thankfully drew a land, playing it and another Mongrel. Then the following turn I sacrificed the Mongrel and played another land, getting me to four mana! This was KEY, as I had two Wurms in the graveyard which I was able to flashback on this and the next turns, and this was enough to beat him down and win the game! So I somehow managed to win a game that I thought I would lose right away!

And then I (UG Roar) prize split with Tim (GW) in the finals. I thought it was kind of interesting that I ended up splitting in the finals with the other deck I almost played.

Yet again, due to intentionally drawing twice, I was able to get a good view of the metagame and a separate article with all the metagame statistics (in total I have over 500 observations!) should be up on CardShark either now or quite soon.

Obviously I was happy with the deck since I won with it, but that doesn’t mean I don’t think it could be improved. If I were to play the deck again, I think I would make the following changes to the main deck:

#4: The Fate is SOOOOO good against all decks, and Mono-B in particular, but it is a bit expensive.
The trick is I’m not sure what can/should be taken out to accommodate these cards. Some have suggested the Deep Analysis

Basically, more mono-B hate.
I think the final sideboarding decision comes down to what changes occur in the metagame and what the deck would sideboard out in each matchup.

In general, I think the deck is strong against UG Quiet Roar, mono-B, and Bu Braids, fairly even against GW and WW, and has problems with fast UG such as UG Standstill

RECAP
-----
I can’t express how happy I am to have qualified for my third Pro Tour in a row - as I’ve written previously, I went to PT Nice where I placed 48th, and I qualified for PT Boston at GP New Jersey with Team CardShark. Now I’m aiming for the ever-elusive “gravy-train” of 20 “pro points”. For those of you that don’t know, pro points are given out for a Top 32 finish at a Grand Prix (1 point and up) and for going to a Pro Tour (2 points and up). The better you do, the more pro points you get. If you’ve accumulated 20 or more pro points in the year preceding a Pro Tour, you’re automatically qualified for that Pro Tour. So far, I’ve received or will receive:
- 5 points for my 48th place finish at PT Nice
- 2 points for Team Cardshark’s 3rd place finish at GP NJ
- 2 points minimum, more if we do well, for PT Boston
- 2 points minimum, more if I do well, for PT Houston.
So that makes a minimum of 11 points I’ll have after PT Houston. So hopefully between various Grand Prix and doing well at Boston and Houston, plus possibly qualifying for Chicago or Italy, I can get the remaining 9 points and board the train. :)

There are many people I’d like to thank for their help in preparing for this tournament:
- Ben Peli, the self-proclaimed “thief who stole the deck from Seth Burn,” for “discovering” the deck and sharing it with my opponent in the GPT, Valentin Moskovic.
- Everyone at CardShark, for their help and support (not to mention hotel room :). A special thanks goes out to Marcus for being there at some god-awful hour to watch my semi-finals match.
- Multiple CMU guys, particularly Paul Sottosanti, Mike Turian, Nick Eisel, Eugene Harvey
