CardShark Content - Adam Fischer (8/21/2002)

This article is a follow up to my previous article on OBC metagame statistics. In the last article, I covered all the information I had personally observed or gathered online or from others through Origins, plus one local GPT held after Origins.

AS a warning, this is going to be a rather long article with lots and lots of numbers. For those of you that just want the “bottom line,” feel free to skip ahead to the SUMMARY section at the end.

Since that time, I have been able to gather a LOT more information on the metagame through August 11. The information consists of
- 2 complete GPTs
- A sample of 1 OBC side event
- A sample of 2 GPTs
- A sample of 2 PTQs
- All of round 6 of a PTQ
- 3 E-League Top 8s
- 8 GPT Top 8s
- 12 PTQ Top 8s

In total, 501 decks were observed – 300 decks that were just “part of the general field” and 201 decks that were “top performers” (in the Top 8 or with records of 3-1-1 or better).

In the data that follows, I have identified the decks by their color(s) and type, if applicable and known. Major colors are capitalized, and splash colors are lower-case. Also, events are listed by type and date, with a note as to whether the decks make up all of the decks at an event (“ALL”), a sample of decks from a given round (denoted by “Rx(part)” where x is the round number), decks with a certain record, or decks in the Top 8.

First of all, below is the raw data for the observations (decks ordered roughly by popularity, with similar decks next to each other):

deck.

Now, the above data is helpful but it really needs to be worked with some more to give us a clearer picture of the metagame. In particular, the amount of it needs to be reduced so it can be more easily digested. So, the next step is to group the decks under broader categories as well as to group the results by week.

I have chosen to group the decks as follows:
- “UG Threshold” will include both the Standstill

variants.
- The “UG Unknown” decks will be allocated pro-rata to the other UG categories.
- The “Mono-B Other” decks will be allocated pro-rata to the other mono-B categories.
- “White Weenie” will include all versions, whether they were mono-White or splashed a color
- Given that there was only one observation of the “Wu Birds” deck, it will be grouped into the “Other” category.
- All other decks will stay the same

Upon making the above changes and looking at the presence of decks in events overall, without regard to which ones posted exceptionally good records, yields:

Looking at the information above, we can make the following observations:
- UG as a whole was by far the most-played color combination, with 35% of the field, with a definite trend away from Quiet Roar builds and towards Threshold and Madness builds
- Mono-B was the next most popular combination, with 30% of the field, although it appears that the Defiler builds gave way to the more traditional control builds later on
- GW had 11% of the field
- White Weenie started off at around 6-7% of the field, but later fell to just 2%, averaging 4%
- Bu Braids appeared to be gaining in popularity in the last week, with 3% overall but 6% in the last week
- All decks other than the above 5 represented just 17% of the total field

Now, let’s look at the decks that made Top 8:

So it looks like:
- UG as a whole represented 42% of the Top 8 decks, with this amount mostly split evenly between Quiet Roar and Threshold builds, but with a definite trend away from Quiet Roar builds and towards Threshold and Madness builds
- Mono-B as a whole represented 32% of the Top 8 decks
- GW represented 10% of the Top 8 decks
- Bu Braids represented 4% of the Top 8 decks on average, but was MUCH higher, at 10%, during the last week
- All other archetypes combined represented just 12% of the Top 8 decks

As I did in my previous OBC metagame statistics article, the final step in analyzing the metagame is to compare each decks Top 8 presence with its presence in the overall field. There are two ways to go about this:

1) “Direct Method”: Use just the events for which data is available for both the general field and the Top 8. This results in the most consistent data, however the number of observations is probably too small to be meaningful.

2) “Overall Method: Use all events, assuming that the general field can be expected to remain reasonably constant across events once enough observations have been made. This allows a comparison using a larger number of observations than would otherwise be possible, but the results are based on the assumption that the field remains relatively constant across events.

To assess each deck’s performance, I use a very simple measure that I call a “Strength Ratio,” which is the ratio of a deck’s percentage of the field of top performers to the deck’s percentage of the general field. Decks with ratios above 1.0 can be considered strong decks, and decks with ratios below 1.0 can be considered weak decks.

Using the first method of evaluating deck performance, we get:

Direct Field-to-Top 8 Comparison
Field Field Top 8 Top 8 ´´Strength

So what can we learn from all of this?
- The Direct Strength ratios seem to be highly erratic and the number of observations probably really is too small to yield meaningful results. Therefore, the Overall Strength Ratios should be used.
- UG appears to not only be popular, but also appears to be doing well. The Madness version is particular shows some promise, but the number of observations is too small to rely on.
- Mono-B is also doing well, particularly the classic control variant.
- The other significant archetypes (GW, WW, and Bu Braids) appear to be performing in line with their presence in the overall field.
- The less-popular decks (UB Psychatog

SUMMARY
-------

It appears that OBC is a rather balanced metagame between UG, mono-B, GW, Bu, and WW, with no archetype having a performance that is significantly out of line with its presence in the overall field.

The breakdown of the metagame is as follows:
- UG: 35% and relatively steady, with a definite trend away from Quiet Roar builds and towards Threshold and Madness builds
- Mono-B: 30% and relatively steady, with Defiler builds giving way to more traditional control builds
- GW: 11% and relatively steady
- Bu: 3%, but rising towards 6% and possibly higher
- WW: 4%, but falling towards 2%
- All others: 17%

All the major deck types listed above are performing at or slightly above average, measured by their Top 8 representation compared to their overall field representation.

Download all of the above data as an excel spreadsheet.

Hope that helps and happy testing!
