CardShark Content - Adam Fischer (9/17/2002)

OK, I know what you’re probably thinking – 102nd?!?!? That’s not very good! Well, it is true that I wanted to do a lot better – at least make Day 2, for instance. However, there were 605 players, which made 102nd place in the top 17%. Plus, one of the only two players I lost to ended up winning the entire tournament and the other ended up in 12th place! Finally, I played some really good, highly-rated players, and my constructed rating went up 11 points to a healthy amount above 1900. So all in all, I felt it was a respectable performance though not as great as I would have liked.

The biggest decision, as always, was deciding what deck to play in the event. Luckily, by this point, I had tons of data and how the various deck types were doing in the major events. I had done a statistical analysis on the results from Worlds Day 3, GP Sapporo, and GP London. This analysis, with results from GP Cleveland added in, should now be posted for download, along with instructions for reading it, at http://www.starcitygames.com/magic.php, with an analysis article that uses that data here on CardShark.

At the time I did the analysis, prior to GP Cleveland, three deck types stood out as having better-than-average performance records:
1) UG Quiet Roar – Madness, which had a 53% average win percentage, with a 54% average win percentage against a metagame that mirrored recent events
2) WU Quiet Screech, which had a 56% average win percentage, with a 54% average win percentage against a metagame that mirrored recent events
3) Mono-B Braids, which had a 51% average win percentage, with a 55% average win percentage against a metagame that mirrored recent events

So I decided to start by looking at those three deck types. I discounted the results for Mono-B Braids somewhat because there wasn’t nearly as much data available for that deck type. Also, I didn’t have that much experience with the deck and I think it’s important to be comfortable with the deck you are playing. Therefore, I leaned against playing Mono-B Braids.

WU Quiet Screech had potential, and I had been practicing it somewhat, but its weakest matchup by far is Mono-B Control. Since Mono-B Control had done particularly well at GP London, the most recent event, I was worried that it would be particularly widespread at GP Cleveland. Therefore, I leaned against playing WU Quiet Screech.

UG Quiet Roar – Madness was left as the deck with the most potential. To start with, I had been playing UG much more often than other deck types, although I had been leaning more towards the Threshold/Fate versions as opposed to the Madness versions. Also, UG Quiet Roar – Madness had averaged a 54% win percentage against Mono-B Control, so if the metagame at GP Cleveland did in fact shift in that direction, UG Quiet Roar – Madness could still be expected to perform well.

So once I decided to play UG Quiet Roar – Madness, I needed to decide which exact build to use. I started by looking at all the builds that had done well at recent events and what cards they used. From this, I constructed a table of the cards that were used. Below is a snapshot of that table (a snapshot is used since the whole table wouldn’t fit properly - I actually did the table for 17 decks and included sideboards):

I built an initial version of this deck and played it a lot, and then combined the following information to come up with a final version of the deck:
1) The information in the table above
2) My own playtesting experience and judgment
3) My expectations about the metagame
4) The advice of other players whom I respected

By taking all of that into account, I arrived at the following build that I used in the GP:

In this deck, there aren’t very many Speculation targets, and in fact some version cut the Speculations entirely. However, casting one Speculation can be huge card advantage, but the second one is usually a dead card. 2 of them gives an OK chance of seeing one of them but a very slim chance of drawing the second one.

This was for slower decks where the loss of life wasn’t key or where the deck couldn’t afford to fall behind (e.g. Braids). This was one of the other cards to be cut at the last minute from the main deck, but since it was often used to find land, I felt just adding the 23rd land was better.

SIDEBOARDING STRATEGY:
As I try to do before any major constructed tournament, I created a “sideboarding chart” for the deck. I first use it to fine-tune the deck list and make sure I wasn’t over- or under-sideboarding against any major deck. I also use it to think about in advance what I would sideboard in and, equally as important but often neglected, what I would sideboard out. I don’t necessarily always hold exactly to this chart, as each deck is slightly different and other factors come into play, but I do try to use it as a starting point and a guide. My sideboarding chart for this deck against the major decks I expected to face looked as follows:

OK, now on to the matches. I had one bye due to having a rating over 1800 at the cutoff date. Due to the 605 players in the event, there would be 8 rounds of swiss before a cut to the Top 64 for Day 2. In all likelihood, this meant that I needed record of 5-1-1 (6-1-1 with my bye included) to make Day 2. There would probably be some players at 6-2 who would make Day 2, but these players would most likely all have three byes.
