. A few more cards from Ravnica might make it possible, but it won't be the efficient killing machine it once was.

Scepter Chant - Losing all those excellent one-mana tutors really cuts down the odds of getting a fast Scepter lock going. Furthermore, the deck will get splashed with inadvertent hate because of Affinity decks. Investing your entire strategy in an artifact that EVERY deck will be able to kill at instant speed is probably not on anybody's list of good times. Without some new tutoring or cheap artifact protection source it seems like Scepter Chant won't be very viable.

So what does that leave us with? A fairly new metagame, where almost all of the older archetypes are significantly weakened, combo looks to be almost dead, and aggro is riding high. So now let's take a look at the new contenders for next season

Aggro

Affinity - Like it or not, the dreaded specter of Affinity will once again raise its head. Remember all those cards I just listed as rotating out? Guess how many were used in Affinity decks? Zero. If you want to get technical, some Affinity builds did run Fling

en, and just about every banned card on the Extended list. Affinity got beaten 10 games straight, which proves my point: You should play an Academy deck this season. Unfortunately, ´´they´´ won't let you do that. Seriously though, what was interesting about this matchup was that while Academy killed every single game on turn 3, it had to do so in every game or else it would've lost next turn. The bottom-line is that you can't give Affinity 3 or 4 turns without somehow disrupting it, or it will kill you. This means that any potential combo deck for this coming season needs to be able to stall out the early game or at least stop Affinity from going all-in by using things like Unsummon

will also be a solid stall-out choice.

Combo

Desire - Desire loses so much that it becomes a new deck, with the possibilities of even turn 4 wins getting very remote. This isn't what you want to hear in a metagame that's going to be defined early on by blindingly fast aggro and the Rock which packs 8 hand disruption spells plus Cranials. I'd hold off on considering Desire to be a big threat (again, flame away) until you see what Ravnica has to offer.

Life / CephaLife - This lost the backup pieces to its combo and the better tutors, which will cost it a turn or two of speed. Furthermore, the lack of instant-speed targeting means that you can't stall like you used to with an infinite toughness blocker. That extra turn or two can mean the difference between a Terminate

So what's the conclusion here? As far as I can tell, there's no really good reason to not build an aggro deck at the moment, particularly if you're going for Affinity or Goblins. If you've got Rock or Tooth already built and are itching to use it then go for it, but the fact is that if you're building a deck from the ground up there's no real reason to spend a few hundred dollars on Deeds, Wishes, Fetch and Pain Lands, Extract

s for the sideboard that'll set you back more than the entire cost of the rest of the deck, but it's not like that card's about to lose value or demand anytime soon.

Of course, take all this advice with a grain of salt. Aggro hate could show up heavy in Ravnica, or Affinity and/or Goblins might be deemed too good and get hit with bannings. Some entirely new archetype could emerge and prove to be unstoppable. More tutoring power could easily bring combo decks back to their pre-rotation level. I heard somewhere that Ravnica will feature ´´Urza
