CardShark Content - Adam Landry (11/10/2005)

It's interesting to see the price breakdowns of the various cards in Ravnica. Obviously, the duals start at the 20 dollar mark, and things like Bob and Glimpse are also up there, if only for hype reasons. Loam slipped under the radar and will now be pulling a hefty tag after PT LA, but there's a more interesting phenomenon going on in the uncommon slot. Namely, a lot of really, really good uncommons are being given the ten cent treatment. Lightning Helix

? Is the power level really that disparate? That's what I'm here to look at, one of the cards that has gone way under the radar and ended up with a ten cent price tag despite it's power level.

. Third, it's a TRIPLE tutor. You get up to three perfect creature draws for the price of one card and three mana. It doesn't put them in your hand, but you get up to three cards. It's even a freaking instant, so you can cast it at EOT and then come out of the gates with your first guy right away.

Now, I'm not going to build a deck here that'll win you a tournament or get some hype from Mike Flores. Mostly because I'm not about to restrict myself to Standard format, where I'm sure the card isn't quite so hot. This is a card that needs options to get good, and T2 just doesn't have the right pool. I am going to show you that this card can be crazy enough to justify a bump in price from ten cents to at least a dollar. Then you can all go out and hoard them, waiting for the inevitable price increase. At least some of you missed the boat on Loam and wish you hadn't...here's your second chance. Just, you know...buy a million of them so you get a good return. Yeah.

First thing to consider with this spell is what does it do for you that other tutors don't? Obviously, if it's going to be broken, it's going to be the three creature stack that breaks it. How do you do this though? The first thing that comes to mind is the general strategy of The Game and Proteus Staff

will get the job done as well, if you've got a ton of mana floating around. Basically though, I'm a fan of the first two stacks, since they require roughly the same amount of mana that Congregation costs. It could stand to be faster, but if you're already running Congregation, it's just 4 cards to add to the deck for a combo that people build ENTIRE decks around. But what else can be done with this card?

Obviously, the next use of Congregation would be to get creatures that compliment each other well. Maybe something that gives you a lock or a ridiculous position? For locks, one of the most annoying of all comes to mind: Mother of Runes

There's more out there, just dig around. If you splash for a third color, like Red, it doesn't take too much imagination to pair up the Goblins correctly. Warchief, Siege-Gang, Piledriver...Triple Sharpshooter, whatever. Eternal Witness

, you get the idea.

Here's a sample list I've put together, by no means definitive, but a heck of a lot of fun to play. Basically, Congregation gets you out of ANY situation you might be having trouble with, and lets you grab E. Witness as well to ensure you get to do it again. So much so that I splashed for Blue in order to get some more copies of Congregation with Drift of Phantasms

. The mana base can certainly be pimped out if you've got the inclination, but it's decent even as-is with the Elves and Wayfinders. Just remember that the entire goal is just to cast Congregation and tailor the stack to your needs, including E. Witness to get it back and go again if you need to. Have fun with the under-appreciated uncommons from Ravnica!
