CardShark Content - Adam Landry (11/27/2005)

I was going to title this article differently, given the number of readers of my previous article ´´Girls Gone Wild´´. I am only able to conclude that it was the title that garnered far more hits than anything else I'd ever submitted to CardShark in such a short time span. Regrettably, I'm here to talk about a non-casual, serious Standard deck, so I don't want to distract from that. You'll have to wait for ´´How to Attract Nubile Slave-Girls with Cardboard´´. Sorry

If you look back through the standings and matchups of the day, you'll see that Levy played almost everybody in the eventual T8 and stayed right up at the top tables all day, beating Ruel when he played him. As I said, the list is given the title ´´Aggro Rock´´, but if you look at it you'll notice something odd:

When you see Green and Black together in a deck the instinct is to cry ´´Rock´´, regardless of any sort of rational basis for that name. Rock has changed so much from its original form that many people aren't aware of what the name actually references, even though the philosophy behind it is roughly the same. Rock is slow and steady, mixing cheap disruption with efficient creatures that let it slowly take over the game. It runs Deed as a reset button and Eternal Witness

and FTK and Baloth for card advantage.

This deck is all about early acceleration and playing hyper-aggressive creatures and broken equipment. The disruption package merely serves as a backup for this goal, instead of being absolutely critical like it would be in a normal Rock build. The best classification for a deck like this would be Suicide Black with a large splash for Green, made possible by the new dual lands. Yes, it's an Aggro deck made with Rock cards, but it goes nowhere near the general grinding strategy of Rock. It's much closer to the B/W Legacy deck that Chris Pikula just took to a second place finish.

While it's been overlooked, it's getting closer to the mainstream. It's started to T8 at the various tournaments being held across the world right now and it has good game against Tog due to Duress

, which will make it a good choice.

But I'm not all that interested in the Extended deck, except to note one thing. There are only 6 slots in this deck that contain cards that are not Standard legal. Of those 6 slots, only 2 cannot be easily replaced with cards that are just as good in the format they'll be played in. That's pretty amazing, and the result is a very powerful deck that's a little off the radar right now.

Here's the list I've been running with excellent results:

The largest difference between the two decks is the lack of the hand disruption package in the Standard version. These are the only 2 slots in the deck that don't have on-par replacements at the same mana cost. In testing, it becomes quite clear that Distress

There are a number of choices for the replacement creatures, some of which are going to be a metagame call. Standard is occurring primarily at the FNM level right now, so you should have a good idea of what you'll be facing and how to act accordingly. With these, you've got to know how often you can get away with one toughness creatures. Isao, for instance, is amazing against MUC and WWr, but any deck packing Darkblast
