CardShark Content - Alan McCandless (12/20/2001)

Well, thanks to my wonderful fiancee, I’m lying in the hotel room anxiously anticipating Grand Prix Las Vegas. I received the trip as my birthday present from her. I lived here in the City of Sin many years ago, and it’s amazing at how many things have changed.

However, I digress. The trip in was rather uneventful, however, once you arrive at McCarren Airport, you immediately are struck by the dazzling display of lights, advertisements, and of course, the slot machines. The very air about you sizzles with the spark of electric dreams and the mood sets in that you are indeed in Sin City. I began to realize what a tourist attraction the city is when upon picking up my luggage I meander into a line as long as the newest attraction at Cedar Point just to get a taxi. My driver is foreign (What taxi driver isn’t?), so conversation is pretty much limited to, “How are you?”, and “Good Weather”.

I got to my hotel for ten bucks and some change and check in......another note of interest is that even at your hotel you must walk all the way across the gambling-laden lower floor to arrive at an elevator that will take you to your room. After unpacking and setting about getting my decks in order, I grab my backpack of trade items, notepad, and head over to the Grand Prix site.

Okay, so the gambling bug finally bit as I passed by a slot on the way out. I grabbed what loose change I had in my pocket (three nickels) and tossed them down the throat of the nearest one-armed bandit. I pulled the lever and got four-of-a-kind! My $0.15 had suddenly become $2.50. Not wanting my luck to run out, I continue out the lobby with a pocketful of nickels and hoof it a few blocks (never again, that was the longest three blocks I had walked in a long time) to the tournament HQ at Alexis Park. I walk in the same time as Mike Donais enters. I chat a bit as we are searching for the rooms. We open a door, see no-one and a disarray of tables and assume that it must be another room. Just as we are about to exit the room and continue our search, Mike recognizes a person entering the room. It became apparent that we had arrived a wee-bit earlier than the rest of the people, including the TO and staff.

So as I lounged about the room helping set up as I could (tablecloths, banners, etc.), I playtest various decks I had brought along with me. John from Cardhaus calls out from behind me, chats a bit, and then he heads out as well, disappearing as suddenly as he had shown up. Finally a few people begin to trickle in, and I get to playtest a bit. After a few trades, the organizers want us cleared out for a bit while they finish final preparations. Mike Stewart catches me in the lobby and we head to his room to playtest for the Trial. He already has 3 byes due to a previous Trial victory, but he plans on playing to get a feel for the metagame and his own deck. At around 6:30pm, we head over to the GP to fill out decklists and prepare for the trial. I complete another trade and hand in my decklist:

Mike told me afterwards that he thought Dustin was playing slow as well, and that I should have called over a judge. The way he states it is probably much more succinct than anything that I could say....”Go for the throat. If you want to win, play like you mean it. This isn’t your local FNM tourney, if you think they are doing something wrong, then call the judge.” Well, I unfortunately am a rather relaxed player, and consider actions like that, or like calling over a judge when someone flips over a sideboarded card while shuffling your deck prior to game 2 (foreshadowing?), a rules-lawyering loss of spirit of the game, but unfortunately he’s right. I resolved after the Grand Prix to take a more serious attitude towards large events like GPs and PTQs, but that’s for another article and another time.

next turn to get the block and then get the kill the following turn. I attack and take Jesse down to 5. Jesse topdecks an incinerate and kills off the Mage, coming over with the Treetops for the kill.

Game 3 -- Well, this game was probably the quickest in the history of the tournament. I mulliganed down to 5, and Jesse came over with nothing but Treetop beats for the win. Not much else to comment about that one.

Round 7 No Show

Once again my reputation precedes me and inspires my opponents to leave without ever facing me. Either that or it was getting rather late and people either wanted to get some sleep or found other distractions more to their liking. (Geez, what can you do in Las Vegas other than play magic?)

Round 8 Jeff Finkula

Game 1 -- I found it rather ironic that the last round I play should be the one that I face a deck I was actually planning on playing. Jeff and I both had no shows the previous round and played against each other to pass the time. Jeff’s deck is a standard build of the deck, but since this is only his second tournament, he lacked the experience to utilize the full advantage of the deck. Jeff went first, and since we both knew each others deck from playing previously, it was no surprise when he dropped a second turn Meddling Mage

Matches 5-2-1 Games 12-6-0

All in all, I liked the way the deck performed, and if I had called the Judge during my first round, I would have ended up in Top 8. As it was, I finished in 9th with 1/2 a box to show for my 5:00am effort. Yes folks, it really was 5:00am when the swiss rounds ended, and I headed back to the hotel room for some thought and sleep on whether to play my deck which just finished with a decent record or to change my mind and try a different deck. Finkula was still calling out to me, as was my B/G beatdown. Only in the midst of a clouded mind, sleep deprived body, and hallucinogenic atmosphere would I decide on my fate and deck.

Stay tuned for Part III, the Grand Prix
