CardShark Content - Alan McCandless (1/2/2002)

Well, upon returning to my hotel room after the Trial, I thought about what worked and what didn’t. I did see a lot of green going around, and after talking to the locals, they seemed to think that green was going to be a large part of the format as well. Not wanting to rely on my limited deck analysis, I checked in with a few of the Pro Tour players that I knew (Wow, surprisingly they will still up and gambling, who would have thought!), and confirmed the analysis of the metagame -- large amounts of various green decks. With this in mind, Perish

takes on pachyderms like no-ones’ business.

This is why you don’t make deck decisions at 5:15 in the morning after an all-day magic session.......

So I decide to combine the two decks into one superpowered, four-color, monstrosity!! Perhaps this is why I’m not on the Tour yet, perhaps it is also why I still love the game as I do. I take the best elements of each deck, weighing and measuring each card for it’s overall effectiveness when meshed with the rest of the deck. Some obvious decisions are cards like Tithe

, and various other green mainstay critters. So I head to bed and catch 3 hours of sleep in hopes of doing well at the Grand Prix.

I get my wake up call and shower and attempt to catch a taxi to the GP site. Unfortunately, a taxi never comes and I end up hoofing it over and barely make deck registration. Feeling much like this is going to be a bad day, I seat myself at my designated spot and wait for my opponent. During the previous day I had met with a few people and was now an official Card-Shark Team Member. I quick prop before I continue with the Grand Prix summary: Card-Shark couldn’t have chosen better ambassadors to greet the public at Las Vegas. Runi, Erica, and Taea (spelling?), were the most friendly and outgoing representatives I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. What they lacked in knowledge about the game they made up for in enthusiasm and friendliness. A very large mad prop to the official Card-Shark ambassadors. Now on with the story......

Round 1 Ryan Elf Beats

However, me being the man that I am, and not a rules-lawyering bastard, I say don’t worry and we continue with the game. I have decided since then that it was the wrong thing to do and I should have called a Judge over simply for the fact that it is a Grand Prix. Round 4 Dustin Squirrel-Elf

Game 1 -- Well, after a half-hour lunch break, I began contemplating my chances. I would basically have to win out in order to make day 2. I figured that even at 5-1-1, I would probably not make the cut as I had my first loss early on. So this would be the match to decide my fate, and of course, it had to be some random green deck. The whole match is pretty much a blur to me, as Dustin headed right out of the chutes with things like Squirrel Mob

Well, the last round was even more of a disappointment as I got totally rolled over by yet another mono-green deck. I don’t remember the specifics of this one, but I lost two games straight. I believe out of both of the games, I did a total of three damage to him from a single Lightning Angel

Well, after that disappointing round, I dropped and decided it would be more worthwhile to evaluate the field and prepare for the evenings’ events. I checked out the remainder of the top field, and noticed a lack of blue among the top tables. Amazingly, a majority of the decks were indeed green, so my facing off against them wasn’t a run of bad luck, but a small sampling of the entire field. I realize that I shouldn’t have combined the two decks, and my consistency would have been greatly increased had I just gone with either Finkula or All-American Slaughter

. I decided if I were to play in the PTQ the following day I would probably play Finkula.

Well, the rest of the event went uneventful, no DQ’s, no bar-brawling, and no sudden heart failure. I joined a group that was heading to Bellaggio for the buffet there and a little gambling fun. I could go into some detail as to the events that transpired that evening, and what a wild group of individuals with animalistic intensity most magic players are, and how the lights of the City of Sin brings out their base instincts and nature, but I won’t delve into my wanderings through the luminescence of scantily clad females and intoxicating beverages. I did however enjoy myself so much that I overslept and missed the qualifier the following day. Eric from Cardhaus was feeling the after effects of a well-enjoyed evening as well when I showed up around noon to check out what indeed was doing well, and it was he that was to blame for my late departure that previous evening and the debauchery previously mentioned.

As expected, the green field was running rampant through the top tables, dominating the meta-game and shaping the field for the top 8. I need not go further into detail, as you can read all about the Las Vegas metagame on many different sites, including this one. I’ll be wrapping up this quartet of articles with the last installment coming soon. Hope you had exuberant and joyful holidays and I wish everyone a PTQ victory in the coming year.

Ciao, ( I picked that up at Bellaggio)

Coming Soon.....the Final Chapter.
