CardShark Content - Alan McCandless (1/23/2002)

Well, thanks to our wonderful friends at Brainburst, we have a complete spoiler prior to the pre-release! Though I did well at the last PTQ I attended, I have forgone a tourney report in favor of a breakdown of the upcoming Torment

cards, as Sealed Season is about to begin and the Extended Season is over. I am using the database that Brainburst has provided, so card judgments are based on those provided. Cards will each have a constructed/limited rating based on their overall effectiveness in the appropriate environment. On a scale of 1-10, with one being the worst and 10 being the best, I will hopefully give you some insight into both constructed and limited worthy cards, along with a few rants regarding the mental stability of the R&D department. I’ll start off with White, and send in each color as I get them done. Well, here we go, enjoy:

Flying, first strike

First off, wasn’t this one of the questions on magicthegathering.com? A big white fatty, for a rather high casting cost. However, if you look at a 5/5, with two abilities, 7 mana is not a bad bargain. Definite potential in limited environments, as it just says BOMB. However, it won’t see much constructed play, as Iridescent Angel

Possible limited play, as white seems to dominate the air in this format, with such creatures as the Avens and Mystics, though rather expensive for a 1/1 with a high activation cost. This one is a late draft pick, and should be left out of sealed decks if other options are available. Obviously, this creature won’t see constructed play, unless you are making that all-powerful Bird Soldier deck

We reverse the roles on this card, as I believe this is much more constructed worthy than limited. Though currently there are very few enchantments in either environment, this could have a place against mirror matches where each opponent is locked down by Teferi’s Moat

Shouldn’t this be a red spell? Anyways, this has definite potential as a surprise card when attacking or blocking with inferior creatures. The added bonus of a cantrip is always effective, but once again, this card falls shy of being constructed worthy. Limited is much more to this cards’ liking, and should see prevalent play there.

This seems to me like a reprinted card, though I can’t quite think of which one. An obvious choice with the white power backing it in limited, especially when most limited decks are 2 colors....black might be a good choice to name as I think there will be a lot of it in the format. Constructed play will miss out on this, as there is very little need for a pro-color enchantment as a creature of the same type would be more beneficial.

More enchantment removal, though this is more likely to see the limited play than the previous, as attaining threshold, pumping a creature, and being able to cast a spell at the same time seems quite beneficial. Once again, this is a sideboard card, and will probably only see limited play, as discard creatures are few in constructed, unless Psychatog

joins the army as a respectable limited creature. His casting cost of 4 for a 2/3 flyer is acceptable, and with the added metagame call of black dominance, may just be a crucial bomb. Notice it doesn’t just destroy black creatures, but removes them from the game. Constructed play may see this guy in sideboard, but more than likely not.

A decent creature for 1WW, though a little harder to splash in for the multicolor sealed deck. At 2/1, and not tapping to attack, he can play both offense and defense, especially since he can do either and then tap himself to prevent some damage. Probably much more playable in a solid white draft deck, with creatures such as Blessed Orator

The ultimate anti-threshold card. With the emergence of many threshold-based decks in the past extended season, and more than likely those emerging in the current Type 2 environment, this could prove a stable supplement to the White Mages’ arsenal.

A very good pick for draft and sealed, as evasion and defense value for a relatively cheap casting cost are always a good combo. It’s upped toughness allows for blocking of pesky cheap flyers, and threshold adds to its viable uses. Constructed play once again will shrug off this flyer, though limited will welcome it with open arms.

Damage prevention at the appropriate time can be crucial, and this allows for it to take place. At a one white casting cost, it is a decent limited card, though only if you need an extra one in your deck. Adding flashback to this card may have made it more viable, though still lacking that certain something. All right, this guy has it all! A hill giant that doesn’t tap, plus at threshold, he becomes a beast! A definite throw in for the white limited player, as the double colored mana cost prevents it from being casually thrown into any deck. A possible sideboard card for constructed play too, as the white creature threats and black removal could increase after this set.

Once again, a spell which probably should be red or black, but those people at R&D are screwing with the known universe. At 4 casting cost, this spell is playable, especially with the added bonus of possibly removing 2 creatures to 1. White seems to be the element of surprise with this set, and will have a strong counterpart to many a color in the limited environment. Even though this card is constructed worthy, it is highly unlikely that it will see any serious play.

Okay, what is with white and losing or paying life? I think R&D overdid the black theme here, though this could be the ultimate sideboard card against the dark mages sure to emerge in the limited environment. Constructed play will see this critter on the back burner, with a few showing up in possible sideboards.

? Sound like a winner to me. Another bane to the black mage and another bomb in the white drafters’ varied arsenal, a sure bet in limited play, but once again lacking the power that make a card constructed worthy. If Psychatog

continues to be a dominant deck archetype, this could wind its’ way into many sideboards before regionals however.

Okay, okay. If any card says BREAK ME in the set, it would have to be this one. I am thinking this is the first card that will only see constructed play and very, very little limited play. I am withholding any judgment on this card until further scrutiny. Send me an e-mail and let me know what you think :)

Okay, can we say Wrath You?. An amazing card, and probably much more constructed worthy than limited as you have the card draw for making an amazing removal spell. This will still be played in limited, as creature removal and threshold denial is a major factor for the environment. Overall, look for this card to be used in many formats.
