CardShark Content - Alan McCandless (1/25/2002)

Okay, here is the one you have probably been salivating over, the Black breakdown, card by card, and a few of the random rants I have. Once again, I am using the database that Brainburst has provided, so card judgments are based on those provided. Cards will each have a constructed/limited rating based on their overall effectiveness in the appropriate environment. On a scale of 1-10, with one being the worst and 10 being the best, I will hopefully give you some insight into both constructed and limited worthy cards.

A 1/1 flyer for 2 is pretty standard, and can get some early beats in, and the Threshold bonus is decent except for the sacrificing part. At that point, Aether Burst

? Well, though not quite as good, at least it isn’t as bad as the creature one. I really don’t think by the time you reach threshold that the additional 2 black mana will be that great a factor unless you happen to get a big black fatty that is outrageously expensive mid-to-late game (hint, hint). A lot more apt to see limited play than constructed (though I know many may argue this point with me, it just seems that the additional mana boost won’t provide much in the constructed format), I don’t think it will be that major a card in either, as a creature in it’s place is probably much more viable in limited, and as stated, constructed just doesn’t need the minor boost it provides.

Well, I think this is a poor card at best. A 2/1 for 4 is a bit expensive, and you would think it had a decent ability, instead of one that is activated for 2BB. Though it may be a late pick in draft, it will probably see very little play in either format.

Well, another overcosted creature but this one has much more versatility and that much more praise as a limited choice. At 3 mana, a 1/1 seems pretty barren, especially since we have been fed a staple of bears, but the ability of tapping it for one to give a creature -1/-1 more than makes up for its’ cost. The threshold ability especially comes in handy mid-to late game, unlike most of the other threshold critters. A lot of limited play potential, very little to nil constructed.

It’s starting to get better :) A 2/1 for 1 is good in and of itself, but the additional ability of depriving your opponent of his graveyard is a decent boon. With the amount of rampant psychatog decks running around in standard, this little feller may slink his way into some black control decks, though only slightly. In limited, this guy is a beatstick, and be on the lookout for him as he can get some quick damage in before he bites the big one.

Finally, a big fatty for black that may be worthwhile (excluding multi-color cards). At 5 mana, a 6/5 is a pretty decent bargain, especially since the next best thing is Phyrexian Scotia for 4 mana and 3 life. I think the drawback outweighs the power of this beast, and he will definitely find a home in any limited deck, and may well become a dominating force for the upcoming “Black Spring” that Torment

Though this seems to be the chase rare of the set, I don’t believe Chainer is all he is whipped up to be. His ability is a bit expensive, his toughness leaves him vulnerable to many removal spells, FTK and Rage to name a few, and his leave play effect could be a serious detriment to anyone playing heavy black in the limited environment. Don’t get me wrong, I think he may still be playable in limited, and may find a home in some devious Zvi or EDT creation in the constructed format. However, overall, I think he is a rare that will be sought after at first and then left to be invited to the tea party with Minion of Leshrac

was good, and this has the potency of it and more. Though lacking the instant speed effect, having a flashback ability allows for the use of this in many formats, including Extended. The suicide black player may again see the glory days of Extended after this set, though we will have to see over the next year how the environment evolves. An above average rare on the verge of being exceptional. The rather high casting cost prohibits it from being completely abusable, but still very apt to break many a format. In limited, a blue/black deck with bounce can completely abuse this, with returning the creature to play, and then during second main phase bounce it back to your hand. It also will surely see Block constructed and Standard play, and has the potential to move into the Extended Environment, much like the Zombie decks played during this last season. Overall, be on the lookout for this one.

Another decent black creature, this one definitely has the potential brokeness all over it. A 2/3 with a temporal creature removal effect for 4 mana is a fair deal, though the double black in it’s casting cost tends to negate its’ versatility as a splashed card, unlike Nekrataal

If the wording is correct, and the timing effect works much as Jay Schneider described in his article, then it has an outstanding feature, especially combined with bounce effects which are aplenty in blue currently. This is a card that might be worthy of both limited and constructed, though it’s low toughness allows for it to be readily removed in the constructed environment. A sideboard hoser at best, and only if you have threshold. A 2/2 flyer for 4 mana is substandard, and since it is a come into play effect, it’s early game rush is denied as you might want to save it for a hoard of squirrels. At best, it’s probably an overcosted flyer that may do some early game damage, but I think its’ threshold ability is sorely lacking. Limited play late pick or another creature throw-in, constructed play just should not see this card.

A 3/3 for 5 mana seems costly, but a further look into its’ abilities prove that it might indeed be a highly competitive limited card. Blacks’ worst enemy with the release of this set will be the green/white decks that revolve around anti-black. Allowing your Hybrid to block a Rabid Elephant

and then chucking a card before combat resolution allows you to maintain a recurring threat that they may not be able to deal with. It also allows black to summon the air strike that is much lacking in the color, and protects against those pesky Avens. Limited play will find people hoarding these both main and side, while constructed may look less appreciative of this creature, and relegate it to sideboard at best.

Okay, so we have yet another biggggggggg fatty for black, but at first glance this may appear to be an outtake on BFM. An exhorbant casting cost allows this guy only to be played from the graveyard, unless you’re lucky enough to have threshold and a couple of Cabal Coffers

Look for him to be played in Block and Extended, as solid black decks can use him to add to there arsenal. Another big fatty for black, this one is a definite bomb for any limited deck. At 6 mana, a 6/3 Regenerator is pretty reasonable, but with the addition of the come into play effect of losing (notice that it isn’t damage) 6 life, it makes it more than worthwhile to run in any solid black deck. More of a late game win condition, it will probably find its’ way into many limited formats. Constructed will only see this Nightmare

given the right deck, but the disadvantage of it is its’ high casting cost. By the time you reach 5 mana, your opponent will more than likely have played out most of his/her hand, effectively making this a minor setback at best. The flip side is that the majority of that 5 is colorless, allowing it to be splashed into many mana accelerating decks. This one still has me pondering its’ potential in both formats, though it seems that it would be less useful in limited.

Hmmmm.....this one has potential, though for the life of me I can’t quite think of what. Denying your opponent threshold while building your own seems quite useful, but I don’t think it is useful enough. The 3 casting cost allows you early enough game play, but the activation of 2 seems to tie up your mana from that point on. It will probably see much more constructed play in block and the upcoming standard, as madness spells may make more efficient use of this. A limited player will have to finagle and manipulate his deck to work in conjunction with this, but may still make use of it.

, isn’t quite that. Mono black decks will still be few and far between in the constructed environment, and while useful in limited, it still requires a majority of black to be effective. There are too many cards requiring the use of multi-color decks, and adding this in just isn’t worth the loss of versatility other colors provide. Perhaps in a future standard environment after the removal of Invasion block it may become a ringer, but for now it is just an above average rare.

A much better pitch to your Mongrel than to actually play, this cards only redeeming quality is the madness factor. Both limited and constructed play may find this in decks with discarding creature effects, especially Block constructed. In the limited field, it has a good deal to offer in removing additional creatures at the cost of pumping yours.

A 1/1 for 1 is pretty standard, add the ability to build threshold to give it evasion makes it a little better, and then add in it’s threshold pumping and you have a pretty decent one drop to add to the black arsenal. Limited is all about creatures, and the more efficient a creature is, the more likely it is to see play. This one is okay, nothing spectacular screaming out about it, so expect to see and use it in most of the black decks that are out there. As is common with creatures from limited play, they don’t make the cut to constructed.

Do I really have to say much about this guy? A classic reprinted is always good, especially one as much loved as the Sengir. Finally you can break out those foil ones you traded for or received in the Beatdown Set. A 4/4 flyer for 5 mana is a deal in anyones’ book, but the additional effect of chumping all the small flyers out there and swinging for the win could make this a bomb in limited. A much needed boost to blacks’ air arsenal, expect to see this granddaddy of vampires in both constructed and limited formats.

Even without its’ temporal 187 effect, a 1/1 swampwalker could prove to be just enough to edge it into a few limited decks. The relatively high casting cost of 3 for a 1/1 is a minor drawback, and it is still worthy of a slot in many decks. No constructed play for this critter of the night.
