Breakdown - Green

The heart of any current set as Odyssey gave us some of the best green cards in awhile. The green metagame could shape the environment, especially with the potency of black. So let’s take a look at what Torment

has to add to the Wakefield legacy. Once again, I am using the database that Brainburst has provided, so card judgments are based on those provided. Cards will each have a constructed/limited rating based on their overall effectiveness in the appropriate environment. On a scale of 1-10, with one being the worst and 10 being the best, I will hopefully give you some insight into both constructed and limited worthy cards.

just that much better? Since in comparative value you can get 4 squirrels for 4GG and 3 life, or get the same for 2 cards and 2GGGG, it’s pretty much a tossup as to which might be more viable. Though both will see limited play to some extent, I think Chatter may have the edge for constructed play.

, this could become a powerhouse for block constructed. A 3/3 for 3 is always good, but a recycling ability allows this card to be on the verge of brokeness, especially with the addition of being pro-black. Definitely worth throwing into your limited deck, and probably will see constructed play along the way.

Another decent green creature that combines well with discard effects, the sheer power of a 4/4 in limited is something to be dealt with, especially if you can cast it in response to their declaration of attack, chuck it to your mongrel, and pay the madness cost, block their pithily 3/3 and come in for beats. Just from the first few cards listed thus far, I think green definitely has a lot to offer both the limited and constructed formats.

Okay, so maybe I made that previous statement a little early. A 3/3 for 6 is pretty expensive, and the additional abilities of trample and regeneration for a card don’t seem to quite make it worthy. A filler at best for any limited deck, and a token creature for constructed play, expect this one to sit on the sidelines.

An intriguing card, and obviously much more useful in constructed decks than in limited. Since by the time you reach threshold in limited you would probably rather clean out your deck of wasted land draws, it may still find a foothold in limited events. Constructed has the potential to possibly abuse this card, and only time will tell if it does.

A 2/2 for 4 mana is expensive, even with the evasion ability of swampwalking. I think the tapping ability has little overall effect, and this slithering serpent may wind up in a few sideboards, but other than that, limited and constructed play will not see much of him.

Yet another crusader in the anti-black campaign, this bug is a decent bargain at a 2/2 for 3 mana with the additional pro-black ability. Many may relegate him to the sidelines for those matches against the dark forces, but he can hold his own in any maindeck and just becomes that much more of a boon against black mages. Obviously in limited play he is a must for the green mage, and will probably crawl into a few block constructed decks.

I think I prefer a lyrist to this bug, though the increased power and toughness may be a better choice against red mages wielding enchantments. More a sideboard card for limited than main, his one saving grace is that he is a creature, and it’s all about the creatures. Constructed will squash this bug right out of the picture, and choose quicker, purer lyrists for enchantment removal.

A mediocre rare at worst, and potentially amazing at best, I think that he’s slightly overcosted for his ability. A late game Cultivator could be decent, as the excess land that you chuck nets you valuable card advantage, but early game sees him more as a way to attain threshold without losing cards. Expect this to be highly played in limited events, and possibly popping into a few constructed decks here and there.

Another of the chuck and sac enchantments, this one leaves a better taste in my mouth as it may be one of the more usable ones in the set. The ability to pump up that evasion creature a few extra times for the kill is a green specialty, and could be a vital defensive value card as well. Constructed however never really likes enchantments, and will pass this one along with all the others.

, only better. The lowered activation cost makes this a much better solution than it’s predecessor, however, shouldn’t this be a blue spell? R&D has blurred the lines between color abilities with this set, and I’m sure we’ll see some amazing decks with this card in them. Viable in both limited and constructed formats, expect this one to be in the top 10 of the chase rares.

If you ever have enough tokens to make this worthwhile, you should just be beating your opponent in the head instead of casting this. An interesting idea, and the concept probably shouldn’t be overlooked so readily, but green would probably be better off using slots dedicated to this for more token creature spells. Expect to see this in a few constructed decks, and maybe the occasional green mage filler in limited.

is a decent limited deck choice, and the threshold ability makes it all that more appealing. Expect this guy to be taken in the first few picks of any draft and run in any solid green deck in the limited environment. However, I don’t think you will see this Sagittarian misfit stampeding his way into any constructed decks soon, except the occasional block constructed.

A filler for a solid creature base in any limited deck, this has the potential to be quite useful against annoying weenie flyers that can slowly peck away at your life. The threshold adds to it’s versatility, and may just be worthy of an early pick. Don’t expect this hoofed holyman to show up in constructed decks though, as he just doesn’t have the kick to make it.

There’s the green for you, and the last of the colors to prepare you for the upcoming weekend pre-releases and further on down the road in the next PTQ season and standard events coming your way. As the colors progressed, I noticed I may have become more and more leery of the cards, and a little more sarcastic of the innovation that Wizards seems to lack. I just want to say that I think Wizards R&D is doing a wonderful job of keeping the game interesting and enjoyable (all except for the pricing of MTGO, which is an insult to any cardflopper worth his weight), and I look forward to experimenting with the cards brought forth with Torment

Breakdown - Land

What can I say, land is land, and any land which has the ability to become a dual land is good. All the lands in this set are exceptional in the right deck, and useless in the wrong one. I leave you to decide which ones you want to hoard and which ones to use as proxy bait.
