At Grand Prix Las Vegas, I learned a few valuable lessons. The first being, don’t forget to write down Jackal Pup

on your deck list and then have them in your deck. But more importantly, I learned a lot about the extended format, and it’s current phase. 198 decks that day were control decks. This includes Trix, Walamies, Stasis

, and Finkula, to name a few. The total number of players? 462. For all you math guys out there, that is roughly 43% of the field. It would more likely be in the upper 50% if I included the PT Junk decks that ran control heavy. What does this mean? It means for whatever reason, people prefer to sit there, and wait and wait and wait. After playing a game against someone whom played a Walamies deck, I officially dubbed it the ´´Do Nothing deck,´´ because after 2 wins, I hadn’t seen any card that could kill me.

Which might be the real problem with this tournament? Most players forgot that the object of the game is to beat your opponent. You see it all the time. People are drawing to make a better standing? Whatever. If I go to a tournament and my deck doesn’t have a chance to beat any deck, why play it? Sure, Trix can drop the hammer at any given time, but not realistically. The average Trix game goes the full 50 minutes and Trix/Walamies match-ups rarely get game one done. But I can’t blame the players. Wizards encourage it. They could easily fix it, by changing from a Win-Loss system to a Win-Not a Win system. That way, draws will be worse than a loss, as your opponent will also get a worse record. Now, to the point of this article.

If you wish to have a fairly decent showing at an Extended tournament, play a deck that does something. Stay away from control. Don’t hesitant to be quick about killing your opponent. In other words, play to win. If you play to win, all the decks gunning for control decks do little to you. Not only that, but you control the tempo of the match. As in all competitive games, tempo is vital. With half of the field playing slow tempo decks, if you play anything remotely quick, they have to adjust to your style, and thus, breaking out of their own style. What better deck to do that than Deuces and Tres.

Deuces and Tres is basically Three-Deuce with the red swapped for black.

s for the rest of the decks out there.

If you want to, go ahead and play a deck where you only have 4 cards to kill your opponent. Play a deck that ALWAYS runs out of time in the round. Be my guest. As for me, I’ll play a deck that actually threatens my opponent. But what do I know? I went 5-2. Then again, I lost one match to Stompy, another because I had deck list problems, and then proceeded to beat 5 controls decks in a row without Jackal Pup
