A Return to Simpler Mana Bases - Alec Collins (10/27/2013)

Theros is here in full force and just like any brew head I am so excited about the new possibilities for Standard and beyond. I've got to admit, I was pessimistic about Theros when the spoilers first came out. All I kept thinking was “Great, here are some more things for Esper Control to be the dominant deck in the format”. decks and mana bases that cost more than the rest of your deck just to put together. As the Pro Tour approached, I was getting a bit more excited. Mono Red (my very first competitive deck back in the day) was making a surge to the top tables and the possibilities of the set were starting to become apparent. However, that looming dread still hung over me. Pros love control, pros love Sphinx's Revelation

, and pros love shock lands. I was convinced that Standard would jump right back to its normal self after everyone saw the three color brews the pros were jamming. I didn't get to watch much of the opening rounds due to work, however I did catch the top eight. I squeed with utter delight when I saw the deck lists. MONO COLOR DECKS HAD RETURNED!! Ah, the basic land. How I have missed you. Mono blue, Mono Black, almost Mono Green and more! This got my brew juices flowing. I love brewing in mono colors, but one color in particular makes me so happy to play cards. That is Mono Green Stompy!

is the beat stick of all beat sticks. Doubling its size every time it attacks is just back breaking against most decks, and the fact that it has natural trample makes it a card that they have to deal with right then or never at all. One last card that needs some attention is the one of special land in the deck; Nykthos Shrine to Nyx. This card is a HOUSE. With Nykthos on the field in a mono colored deck, there is no limit to the stupid big mana things you can do. For example, playing a Kalonian Hydra

decks.

So there it is. Over all I am very excited to run this deck. I'll be playing this for the next few weeks and any changes I make will be noted. Any who, I guess that about does it for this week. As always, you can follow me on twitter at my new twitter handle (screw you twitter hackers!) @Alec_MTG. Leave me a comment and a rating bellow so I can feel important. Send me an email at acollins1773@yahoo.com with comments, questions, or feedback. Also I am still running the Impossible Brew Challenge. The way this works is send me the name of a bulk rare or mythic rare card, I will attempt to brew a deck around it, take it to FNM, and write about the hilarity that ensues. Send me your suggestions and I will brew. Thanks again for all your support, dear readers.

Until next time, keep brewing out there!
