Pointy Ears and Giant Feet - Alec Collins (4/29/2013)

As many of you know, my last article listed three decks that I was testing to take to SCG Orlando back on the 30-31 of March. I was trying to decide between a Jund

I slaved, cried, tore apart, rebuilt, tested, cried again, flipped tables, rebuilt, and cried some more for 2 solid weeks and I still wasn't satisfied with any of my original selections. The decks were good, but as more of the meta began to develop leading up to the event in Orlando, I couldn't seem to get them to a place where I was happy. I decided that none of the decks were quite ready for the level of play I was going to have to demand from them. With a heavy heart, I decided it would be best to just sleeve up something tier 1 and play the event with that. I pulled the basic shell of UWR Flash

out and sleeved it up. I goldfished a couple of hands and felt my heart sink further. I hate netdecking. I think it is the heart of the brewer that beats deep in my chest and radiates through my soul (like a Native American Brave, only not at all) that makes it hurt to just grab a pre-made, pre-tested, tried and true deck and just roll with it. However, I was dead set on doing well in this tournament.

It was around that time that my twitter lit up with a message from a friend of mine that was driving down for the event.

“Dude, are you ready for the weekend?” it read.
I sighed and wrote, “Yeah I guess. Not super excited about my deck.”
“Sad to hear,” he wrote. “You wanna test a bit?”
“Sure,” I typed. We jumped on MTGO and I geared up to test. I played my tapped Sacred Foundry

, then thanks for playing, you are dead wrong. It was with those little green guys with pointy ears. Elves, elves, and more elves. The deck brewing spirit in me jumped to life. This is was it!! This is what I needed. After testing the deck for several days, we had a version that we were ready to take to the SCG. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the event due to a family engagement, that I had a blast at and do not even begin to regret going to (I love you, family). Fortunately, MTGO still fires dailies and I was in the first queue on Friday night ready to go. What did I play? Well without further gum flapping, ladies and gentlemen here is Elf Surge.

So let's dive in to this deck. I'll tell you why certain cards are in the deck, what the deck is trying to do, and why I feel that this deck is extremely well positioned going into the Standard PTQ season. Let me first go over the key cards of the deck and what we are trying to do with them. So those of you who were playing right before SoM block rotated last year might remember the deck named Elf Wave that made a bit of a splash. The deck was just ramping up with Elvish Archdruid

is a card that people routinely forget how powerful it really is. Getting to add one green mana for each elf you control (including itself), when almost every low cost creature you play is an elf, lets you ramp incredibly fast. Don't forget that it also pumps all your elves +1/+1 which lets you swing for a lot out of nowhere. All that ramp lets you hit a Craterhoof Behemoth

a terribly underplayed card, but it is pretty understandable why. It is a card that requires your deck to be 99% permanents in order for it to be a guaranteed win when it resolves. Normally this is easier said than done. However, this deck thrives on permanents so having it as a one-of guaranteed win is pretty bonkers.

. If you do cast it on its own, it doesn't do as much as say Craterhoof, but it can make your defense impenetrable while you find your real finisher.

So those are my reasons for the cards. I will give you a word about game two with this deck. If you are able to go off game one, BOARD OUT THE PRIMAL SURGE! Once your opponent figures out what you are doing, they will do everything they can to keep you from doing it again. So you board out the Primal Surge

and board in some spells, because I guaranty you won't be able to go off that way past game one. You want to take a more controlling role in games two and three while you carefully sculpt your way to victory. If you just go all out for it past game one, you will lose every time.

Like I said before, I couldn't run in the actual SCG due to a family commitment. But I did play some dailies and I'll go over the highlights now.
