Standard Choices - Alec Collins (3/31/2013)

Having recently moved to Orlando, Florida, I have been utterly amazed by the sheer size of the community down here. Not that the community in my home town wasn't awesome, I love those people. I'm just not used to meeting so many new people with so many new brews and styles of play. This has pushed my deck building to new levels and has forced me to try all kinds of different things to keep my opponents guessing. Plus, with the meta at tier 1 play finally starting to take shape, deck brewers like myself are getting a good idea of what most of the field will look like at the more competitive events. Events like, say, the Star City Open coming to Orlando in late March (excited squeals). With that day fast approaching, my new play group and I have been brewing like mad to find decks to beat out the meta game. After looking it all over, I've chosen three brews to test and fine tune. One of these lucky decks will be the one I run come the SCG Open. I'm gonna let y'all in on my “super secret tech” (cough, cough) so you all can help me decide what to take.

Let's take a look at deck number 1. I give you, Esper Spirit

. That is what this new list hopes to capitalize on using a powerful new spirit weapon.

So here are my reasons for wanting to run this deck. Number one, this deck recovers extremely fast from a sweeper. With spirit tokens being your primary creature, it is easy to see how things like board sweepers do not phase it at all. Lingering Souls

makes spot removal against your spirits completely useless. Heaven forbid you get two Captains down on the board, then even your Captains have hexproof. I've already explained why board sweepers are not a good option against this deck and if spot removal doesn't work ether, well, then that about makes the deck as resilient as it's gonna get. Third, I feel that Esper (Blue, White, and Black) is a color spectrum that is well equipped to take on any threat in the meta. Detention Sphere

gives him hexproof (yes Obzedat is a spirit) while he is on the battlefield and then he just runs away during your opponent's turn so he can't be swept. It really makes him a threat that is impossible to deal with and will take over the game the instant he is played.

Results with this deck on MTGO have been mixed. I've flat out dominated some daily events (4-0,3-1) and then other times I just go down hard (0-4,1-3). While I don't feel like there are no unwinnable matchups, the deck has a rough game one against the superfast Naya

is an incredibly powerful card in a meta that was already in love with RG based aggressive decks. Any time you are going to give an aggro deck a 2/2 for free something is very, very wrong (or very, very right depending on where you are sitting). …. Like I said, broken.

Broken or not, this deck isn't perfect. Like most hyper aggro decks, it tends to fall prey to sweeper heavy control decks. The good thing is that your heavy hitters all have haste so you can recover fairly well from a sweep. That's not really that different from the other Blitz decks. The card that gives the Jund

(that guy you never knew about). Having a big dude with a generally low regenerate cost can be back breaking against a deck that uses a sweeper as its only way out. I'm also not really all that settled on the sideboard for this deck but I'm tweaking it constantly.

Those are the two semi normal decks I've been messing with, but there is one more deck that needs to be brought to light. A true Alec Collins rogue brew from the darkest depths of your binders. Here we go! Introducing Fight Club!

to accomplish something similar. However, cards that let you “fight” were limited to Sorcery speed and a creature. It wasn't all that reliable. Now we have instant speed fight in Pit Fight

! This deck loads up on fight cards then uses the most resilient creatures possible to literally destroy your opponent. It is not uncommon to have a 16/16 Ooze by the time everything is said and done. Pretty awesome, right? The other creatures also fight favorably with other creatures. Strangleroot Geist

Originally this deck, like its original counterpart, was Mono Green. However, I quickly found that the deck had terrible matchups against dedicated control decks and Boros Reckoner

is a force in this deck as well. Kill off a little guy with a fight mechanic and then destroy the real problem creature for one black mana.

As you can imagine, this deck has a fabulous matchup against other creature decks. It puts the breaks on the blitz decks and makes the midrange decks look like toys. It still doesn't have amazing matchups against pure control decks, but the sideboard helps with that. Bring in the extra Planeswalkers and take out the some of the clunkier fight cards like Prey Upon

and Fight Bear and the match becomes much more favorable for you. The results are really mixed, but I feel like if the meta is going to be mostly creature decks, then this deck is extremely well positioned to take the day.

So those are my decks! I'll keep refining and testing and I'll write a detailed article about the deck that wins out. Follow me on Twitter @axlxexc to see how the decks play on MTGO as well as any other magical updates I have. Also be sure to leave me some feedback y'all. I love good and bad feedback alike. If you like you can hit me up on MTGO I love to play games with people. Find me at ixRoRsChAcHxi.

Until next time, keep brewing out there!
