CardShark Content - Alex Capaldi (7/14/2002)

The dominant format of play at Origins this past weekend was certainly Odyssey Block Constructed. The first tournaments of the weekend were in this style and there always seemed to be an OBC tourney to participate in. I entered three of these OBC tournaments, fully knowing what deck to expect. Quiet Roar was the deck to beat. And why not? It’s certainly one of the fastest decks on the scene. Its speed is only surpassed by White Weenie and WW can’t handle the flying wurm tokens. So I had to think of a way to best the best. What would be the Bane of Block? None other than the dastardly destruction of the graveyard. Have a look at the deck I played in OBC this past weekend at Origins:

was an additional method I could have used for card draw, but there wouldn’t be enough in the graveyard to feed it. Unfortunately, these cards just didn’t make the cut.

Let’s look at what happened with this deck in the first tournament I played in:

Match 1: Quiet Roar

I find out my opponent is some kid who has a rating in the 1900s and that he’s playing in the Junior Super Serious tomorrow. I’d almost be intimidated if it wasn’t for the fact that I obliterated him the first game. Match 2: Block Tog

Paired with another “kid,” I just hope the match doesn’t go the same as the first. I start out strong with shades hitting the table fast. There was nothing for him to do first game. I dominated. Second game, I start just as strong, but he gets enough bounce off to delay until he gets some mana on the board. I purposely Faceless Butcher

Nothing really notable here except that Chainer’s Edict is great at getting rid of creatures that don’t block shades. The match was a quick 2-0 for me.

At the beginning of your upkeep, target opponent may remove a card in his or her graveyard from the game. If that player doesn't, you may draw a card.
hits the table and my shades start to follow. I begin drawing five cards a turn every turn and my opponent starts counting my deck every turn. He psycs me into thinking I’m going to draw myself out of cards. I begin sweating even though his Braids is finally forced to block and his squirrels have run out as my four shades are overtaking the board. I attack with them, bring him to 2 life and nothing left to block, but I have two cards in my deck. I concede. My friend points out the “may draw a card” line on Gravestorm

and I proceed to hate myself. The next two games I drop quick shades to fetch me wins. I deserved to lose, I’m glad my deck didn’t.

Match 5: Quiet Roar

The first game took a long half an hour as I slowly drain his graveyard and deprive him of his Roars and Deep Analyses. We play draw-go for a while and I finally outnumber him in creatures and attack for the win. Recall

Match 6: B/G Braids

Game one he drops a fourth turn Braids and I humorously take it like a man. I turn the game around for a while in the middle by getting off a Chainer’s and following it with a Mesmeric Fiend

pulls through yet again and I end the match 2-1.

In the end, I managed to go 4-1-1 and took 6th in the first tournament (only swiss, no top 8 playoffs) I played in and did well in the other two until outside circumstances (trading opportunities weigh more than a box as a prize) made me drop. No fault of the deck caused losses, only early silly mistakes on my part and numerous top decks by opponents. All in all, I’m happy with Grave Outlook and if you enjoy surprising your opponent with a deck that wasn’t even considered to be a top competitor before this weekend, try it out yourself. Stay safe all, have fun and try out this graveyard eatin’ machine.
