CardShark Content - Andrew Kocsis (4/22/2002)

Hi everybody! If I seem unusually happy today that would be because my dog finally pooped back out the Storm Golem she had eaten. It smells like shit but it is all I’e got. With the release of Sinister everyone is going nuts over getting the four horsemen. Let you give you some advice: they suck as figures and the cost of getting them is infinitely more expensive then buying the plane ticket, paying for the hotel, and going to Gen-con on your own. However luckily there are those out there that are looking at Sinister and wondering what impact this set will have on the game. With that said I am going to provide a break down of how WizKids treated each faction with a little rating system I like to call: Cheers and Jeers. By the way, I am positive I do not have enough creativity to think up something like this on my own, so if you know who originally came up with this rating system please let me know and I will give them due credit.

Sinister: Cheers and Jeers

Atlantis Guild: Overall- Jeers

Why Jeers for the Atlantis Guild? Everything they gave has already been seen. Why don’t we take a look at the highlights that Sinister gave them?

Thunder Golem- Should have been called Chump Golem. A 14-inch range sounds nice and pierce sure doesn’t hurt, but what is that? A 90-degree front arc and only one target possibility?! On top of that he can only move six inches! Expect swarms to be all over this guy like Oprah on a baked ham. Utterly worthless for his points. If you want a big golem so badly, at least take the Storm Golem and give yourself a shot.

Magestone Lord- Yeah a new Demi-magus! But he can only shot 10 inches for your investment and his stats drop like a rock after only a few hits. Just take a Black Powder Boomer instead. Cheaper and his stats are more solid.

Automatons- They can be summed up very easily, not good troops. Too expensive for what they do. The Fighting Automaton isn’t bad, but the Utem Guardsmen fills the same role for less points.

Black Powder Rebels: Overall- Jeers

I am sure a lot of people will disagree with me on this one but hear me out. I play the Black Powder Rebels frequently and think they are one of the coolest factions but I really do have a reason I feel Black Powder Rebels got shafted. They were so busy giving the Black Powder Rebels the ability to formation with other factions; they forgot to give them good stuff just for themselves.

Detonating Zombie- Awesome figure, but only reaches full potential with necromancy around.

Zombie Gunslinger- Awesome sculpt of a figure, but worthless when you look at him. But the standard version can shoot three targets and the tough can shoot four! Yeah right, like that will ever occur and be useful for the 56 points you wasted on him. Seriously, if anyone ever gets to use all four targets at six inches the tough version can shoot, please let me know.

Dwarven Stomper- Now we are getting to cool stuff. But what is this? We are looking at 94 points that can only shoot one target! He suffers the same problem as the Thunder Golem; he will get swarmed in the end. However he defiantly gets the award for best model.

Orc Raiders: Overall- Jeers

ed Priest.

Detonating Zombie - For 15 points you can get a powder keg that comes back. Reminds me of how the Immortal Soul should have been made. Especially considering most tournament armies already have a Grave Robber, he should see pretty good play in the coming months.

Troll Gunner- This guy is perfect for making Elemental Turtle armies again with his flame/lightning attack at 12 inches. Even better, you can team him up with…

Elven Demi-magus- Magic blast, magic enhancement, and 16 defense. Add to that you can back this up with Elite Surok Apprentices and you have to admit it looks good for the beginning of an army. Sure sounds like a plan to me.

Knights Immortal: Overall- Cheers

Yeah I know they only got two figures also. But Knights Immortal swarm armies are sweeping tournaments everywhere and both figures introduced can be adapted to swarm armies pretty easily. The Infantry captain gives a tougher standard bearer and the recruit can be used en mass to make up for individual weakness. Kudos to WizKids for backing off the KI for a set.

let us play them very well. At least show a little support for you new factions.

Mage Spawn: Overall- Jeers

Torg, Tomb Horror, and Throttle Worms. Way too expensive, not powerful enough, way to expensive. I think that about sums it up on the Mage Spawn front. Oh well, there are more then enough quality Mage Spawn that WizKids can take an expansion off every now and then.

Solovani: Overall- Cheers

So they cost an arm and a leg in points. Who cares? They are nice sculpts, have an excellent faction feel to them, and in larger games will be on the front lines kicking ass. Expect the Creator to be worth a bunch in Conquest games as she is rock hard all the way through her stats and the Striker will be JFK-ing any target that gets within his amazing 20-inch range. Yo-yo him for a disgusting larger game combo.

That about wraps up my Sinister break down. For even more in-depth reviews of the figures look for Sinister figures to headline the next few Underdogs articles. See ya next time!
