CardShark Content - Arjune Bose (12/18/2003)

For those of us who are new to the standard environment, there are a handful of decks, ranging from the limits of aggro and control. I will cover the control decks in this article.

Firstly we must ask, “What is a true control deck?” A true control deck uses board removal, and uses creatures to deal the finishing blow. It does not keep constant pressure up with creatures. Aggro-control decks use both creatures and removal in order to win. Usually they start out fast, and hold their ground with creatures. In the mid-late game, the play evolves into a more control situation. Although they control spells, creatures are the primary win condition. Land Destruction is the only deck that does not follow this idea. It starts out with heavy control, as beats you down with Rorix, Ravenous Baloth

, and other big creatures. The last group of decks will be the aggro decks. These decks are typically fast, and use creatures for the win. They rarely deal with unintentional ties in tournaments. The object of aggro decks is to keep constant pressure up, especially against the control player.

Here is a list of the most common decks running around in standard:

The most powerful deck in the current Standard is U/W Control. It has the tools to battle Goblins, and the permission to deal with control. In the Aggro vs. Control matchup, the control player wants to deal with the early dropped creatures. Usually, this will be a Goblin Piledriver
