CardShark Content - Arjune Bose (12/22/2003)

In the article I wrote, I covered the control decks of the standard environment. Today, I will talk about the aggro-control decks. Typically, aggro-control decks use fast creatures to start out the game, and shift to a control game in the end. Some people call certain decks control, while others call the same deck aggro-control. While our definitions may be different, aggro-control decks can be very powerful, because they can survive both early and late games.

White is not the dominant color in aggro-control. Most of the colors are present, as cheap spells and expensive ones, and ones in between can be used. The color that seems to be missing is black. This is because black’s spell costs make it either an aggro color, or a control color. There is not much in between. So, without further ado, here are the aggro-control decks.

’ big brother with life gaining. However, this deck did not make a lot of Top 8’s at Champs, but it can compete with many tier 1 decks, like U/W Control. The main reasoning behind its success/failure is that Affinity can rip it to shreds, but it does very well against control decks. G/W did not win any Champs, but most builds are similar. The only major difference between builds is the inclusion of Birds of Paradise

Affinity is the first deck to be made almost entirely of Mirrodin cards. It uses cheap artifacts, and artifact lands to make cheap creatures, and pull them out very quickly. There are two distinct builds of Affinity, each with its own set of weaknesses and advantages. The more aggro Affinity can be murderous, and even outrace some of the other aggro decks in the format. The control Affinity (Sarina Affinity) is just the opposite, except Sarina Affinity usually defeats the aggro Affinity builds. The main reason is that Sarina Affinity will almost always have a counter, to deal with the painful Akroma’s Vengeance

. This makes for a better control matchup, but a much slower deck that does not require as much artifacts. The main difference between the control and aggro Affinities is the creature count. . The mana base is usually not a problem, artifacts being colorless, but if there is a mana problem, Affinity is doomed. Affinity can sink to as low as 17 lands, but it has to use Talismans to keep the mana count in check. This offers for a much more stable mana base. Affinity will only get stronger as a deck, with Darksteel and Fifth Dawn, so watching out for this deck is a must for the standard player.

Aggro-control decks have always been powerful, for their ability to stay alive in both the early and late game. Some notable decks, like U/G Madness defined aggro-control. In the current standard, the field is dominated by both aggro-control and control decks, but the aggro decks are not down and out. In my next article, I will discuss the aggro decks.
