CardShark Content - Arjune Bose (2/14/2005)

In a recent article by Aaron Forsythe, he made it clear that big changes, in the form of banning would come to Standard on March 1st. He talked about how Extended had the perfect metagame, and how Standard was just the opposite of that. This article is to warn players about cards that could be banned in less than 2 weeks:

. However, I do not think Wizards will ban him. As a rule of thumb, chase rares are usually not banned, since people pay a lot of money for them. Also, he has a replacement called Atog

, it does not have a good replacement, either.

Artifact Lands: This would be a huge blow to Affinity, because they lose a lot of acceleration. Also, this would neuter decks like KCI. The argument for banning these is that once Ravager is gone, people will still have to pack artifact hate MD because KCI will become the new Ravager. The argument against this is that it nullifies other forms of Affinity; the ones using Broodstar

BIG changes could also mean bannings from other decks. Wizards sometimes uses the percentages of decks playing the cards to ban. Last year, about 70% of the decks at Regionals used Skullclamp

. The other 30% had a way to deal with it. Although Skullclamp

was a great card, if only 30% of the decks out there used it, it would be very possible that it would still be here today.

With that said, if Ravager Affinity gets the boot, I predict that we will see a rise in G/x decks. It could be G/r, G/u, G/b, and even G/w. However, all of these decks would have one card n common: Eternal Witness

. Although I would disagree with it if they did, I would not be surprised if Wizards banned the Witness too.

In any scenario, those who play Ravager or KCI should be wary of March 1st. Even those who do not play Ravager should be aware of a large metagame shift. It is time to think of new decks, or resurrecting old ones. The time of change is upon us, and almost certainly, Ravager will be gone.
