CardShark Content - Arjune Bose (8/6/2005)

Well, now that 9th Edition is officially released, we can take a look at the color white, and how it will impact Standard. Of the five colors, white seems to be the strongest, with almost every card playable in 9th Edition limited. 9th Edition also makes white a good color for constructed. Here is the breakdown:

Although not a game-breaking card for constructed, this card will be seen all around casual circles, and limited events. Not only does this provide an extra three damage, it also gives a creature evasion. Although it would be much, much better as an instant, it will still see significant play in limited.

A good utility creature in both limited and casual games, this makes all of your opponents’ creatures basically lose 1 toughness. It will be a good midrange (6-10) pick in draft, but don’t pick it too high, unless you’ve established white as one of your colors.

This is a very solid 3-drop for white, because often, the 1-toughness doesn’t matter. Its ability to fly also puts your opponent on a 10-turn clock, something very powerful in limited. Also, many fliers in this set do not have 3 or more toughness, which makes him win many dogfights. He may see some play in the new white weenie as well.

This card was amazing in white-based control, and will remain very useful in Standard. Another great sideboard card in limited, and another good card in casual, this will be played in all of the major formats where it could potentially be played.

As we enter the rare section, most of there cards will be good in limited, and in casual play. I will discuss the constructed value of the rares more than the limited and casual aspects.

This guy is amazing, since he can only really be killed via combat. A 2/2 first striker is good, but white’s ability to pump him up make is absolutely awesome in limited. Casual players may not get much use from his 2/2 body, but this may become a 4-of sideboard card for white weenie, especially when playing against monored decks.

For 2 mana, a bear with vigilance is always good. He will be played heavily in limited, and will probably see play in casual, but his fate in white weenie remains to be seen. I do not think he will make the cut into Standard white weenie, because of the other great cards white received from 9th Edition.

From looking at this spoiler, you can tell that white is a very strong color choice in 9th limited, but it may have some new playables for constructed as well. Casual players should also flock to get 9th Edition packs, because of the many great commons and uncommons white offers.
