First a little about me. I learned to play Magic just as Ice Age was starting and The Dark was ending. Thanks to Jenny and Gary for teaching me the game back when we actually played for ante. I still remember the first Christmas after I started playing and was given 4 packs of Ice Age only to find one with a Jester’s Mask, one with a Jester’s Cap, and one with Deflection

). We both spent many days between school bus runs having massive cold wart games where we reached a point where we had to attack or deck ourselves. I knew there were leagues and tournaments, but only 2 years ago did I start playing Friday Night Magic on a regular basis at a shop about a half hour drive from where I live. Mark and I are both semi regulars there and have learned a lot more about attacking quicker, especially in Draft Formats.

Yesterday was the release event where I played my fifth Booster Draft with the new Guildpact set and I thought I'd pass along a few tips and pointers. A lot of people are going to have to get used to not playing creatures during the main phase before combat, and I have to admit I am one who wants to play his creatures in the main phase before combat. But with the new set and the Gruul I have to rethink my strategies. Yesterday was my first attempt at drafting a Gruul deck and I have a few tips to pass along for the guild.

Let’s start with Silhana Ledgewalker

, a creature with a casting cost of 1G for a 1/1 isn't a great blocker, but the ability of being unable to be blocked except by flyers comes in real handy. There is only one flyer with a 2 casting cost (TW91cm5pbmcgThrull

because it can't block). Silhana then becomes a great sneak through for 1 point after which you can bring out the Gruul that have Bloodlust much easier. Silhana's secondary ability of being unable to be targeted by an opponent’s spells and abilities make it easy to avoid spells like RG91c2UgaW4gGloom

, which allows all your creatures to deal their damage as if unblocked. If you can get a bunch of creatures out to block, then you can wait until you have enough to wipe out your opponent in one fell swoop. The Gruul guild’s biggest problem is a lack of flyers, but it does have a whole lot of huge creatures at low casting costs.

The Izzet's biggest plus is the replicate ability. I have seen a couple of people in Draft Format go for as many Wee Dragonauts

it makes them easy to pump up and hit for extra +2/+0 with each spell. You do have to remember that the replicate ability does not mean that is a separate spell but copies of the same spell, much like the storm ability, so the copies don’t trigger the Dragonauts. I have not yet tried to draft the Izzet and don't know if I will, but I'm sure if I do I'll be using the Wee Dragonauts

(Why do I have the urge to use an Irish accent when I say their name?) [Editor’s note: He’s right, you’re supposed to when reading the card name. It’s in the rulebook.]

Last but not least is the Orzhov Guild. There are a lot of life gain and slow down cards for your opponent in this guild. In my flight at the Pre-release I happened to (out of 3 Guildpact packs) end up with a PAIR of Angels of Despair. How could I not play Orzhov? I made it to round 5 just shy of the final round with prizes. Pillory of the Sleepless

comes in your opponent loses two and you gain two. When the Euthanist comes into play you can kill any creature damaged this turn, which is really nice if you attack with it, they block with a big bruiser, once damage is on the stack you can make all your creatures go away until the end of turn.
