CardShark Content - Arthur Childers (6/3/2006)

The recent release draft was one I was looking forward to with much anticipation, not only did I have two new Guilds to play with but I LOVE the new Graft ability which has already seen play in some regional decks.

My two friends Roger and Josh and I drove over to a game shop in a nearby town where we are known and always made to feel welcome. Most importantly none of the players there act like “I have the power 9 and since your parents didn’t buy them for you, this makes me the better player.” I will always visit a shop where I am made to feel welcome over a shop where people treat you like you’re beneath them even if one is a mile away and the other is 28 miles away. But I digress, the day of the event I saw the owners getting out packs of Ravnica and I thought “I hope they don’t do RGD I really didn’t want to go away with only one pack of Dissension, but they surprised up by letting us draft RGDD which was a lot better. (Which is another reason I love to go to this shop).

Once I was done drafting the Ravnica packs I ended up with the following:

This was good as it gave me a very solid Green/White base to build on, I knew in Dissension I had more chances at Green/Blue and Blue/White with a lot of auras and counterspells in Guildpact I was hoping to play maybe a 3 color Green/White with a splash of Blue.

Once I was done drafting Guildpact packs I had the following to build with:

Ok now to begin construction of my deck, what did I choose? What would you choose? Let me just say that the deck I drafted went for 4 rounds of swiss totally undefeated

The first thing I did was drop out anything with red and or black in it as I didn’t have many of that color to work with. I considered Boros Fury Shield

42 cards total

In my first game I was playing someone who was trying to make the Hellbent mechanic work for him only to run into a swamp shortage – the final blow for him came from me using Might of The Nephilim on an Azorius First- Wing to finish him off in a sweep of both games.

My second game was up against someone who was also trying to make the Rakdos Hellbent mechanic work. He actually got off Delirium Skeins

to make us both discard to an empty hand each but I pulled out creatures quicker to put him away in a two game sweep

My closest game came the next match; I was paired up against my friend Josh who had also swept his first two games. The first game came down to a very close match; we were both hitting on each other with our Guardians of the Guildpact but the deciding move was when I attacked him leaving only one Transguild Courier

I walked away that day with my best showing in a release event with extra packs of Dissension and the alternate art life counter. I’ve considered just setting this deck aside as a draft reminder.

I know I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I LOVE to draft as it starts everyone out on an even keel.
