CardShark Content - Arthur Childers (8/16/2006)

Okay, since I am the biggest supporter of the draft format in my articles I feel it is my responsibility to warn you of the dread menace of (insert dramatic drum riff here) RIPPLE!

Coldsnap arrived amid much speculation of how a stand alone set would affect the Standard format. Also it led to much speculation of what it would rotate out and when it would rotate out, all of which are secondary to the ripple mechanic. The ripple cards: Surging Strength (green), Surging Flame

. For those of you who aren't familiar with the mechanic, it allows you to reveal the next 4 cards from your library. If you find another spell of the same name you can play it for free and here we go with another ripple. The biggest threat of these cards is that they are all commons so you will see quite a few of them in any draft format.

Car problems prevented me from attending the pre-release (any donations of a pre-release card would be appreciated) so my first experience with the set was with the FNM on the night of the release. That night I drafted mostly black with at least 7 Feast Of Flesh and Void Maw

which along with the 4 Disciple Of Tevesh-Szat led me to a sweep that night. I have to admit I fell in love with Feast of Flesh

The next day at the release event I saw my strategy from the night before turned against me with the dread menace of RIPPLE. We had booster drafted 4 packs of Coldsnap to create our decks this day. We played a 5 round Swiss format and I had drafted 2 Juniper Order Ranger

. With these two he was able to either kill the creatures or bounce them back, rippling his spells all the way. After a while my wolves were too big to feast on so they had to be bounced. He also drafted a few Chilling Shade

Every draft since then it seems that someone has to abuse the ripple ability. The black one isn't as readily abused as the others but with the draft format where you aren't restricted to 4 of any one card. I'll admit I abused what I call the cumulative cards (cards that get extra for each other ones in all graveyards). Sound The Call (green), Rite Of Flame (red), Kjeldoran War Cry

(blue). These spells get better as more copies of them are put into a graveyard. After a while it becomes just as dangerous for you to play them as your opponent.

Coldsnap is now in its second month of play and since it is a smaller set than most, a lot of people are becoming bored with the limited amount of cards in the set. With seven weeks and 3 days of FNM to go until Time Spiral

(as of the time I am writing this which is Aug 15), stores will have to find ways to change things up by either adding a few random packs from the Ravnica block or from the core set to change things up.
