Drafting Commons In White Future Sight - Arthur Childers (5/15/2007)

As everyone knows who has ever read an article I’ve written, I am a HUGE draft fan and probably always will be. I love a platform where everyone starts with zero and tries to get the best possible deck.

Starting here I am gong to try and dissect each color. Would I draft it? Will it end up in my main deck? And I’ll point out what I think are any pros/cons of the cards. So I am going to start with white as I have drafted it quite often lately.

As a cheap opener with shadow you can get through for some easy damage. Teamed later in the game with Snake Cult Initiation

Enchanted creature has poisonous 3. (Whenever it deals combat damage to a player, that player gets three poison counters. A player with ten or more poison counters loses the game.)
it can really deal some smack down. Plus you can make them use up their removal spells early once they get tired of it, and if necessary there is the 4 life boost.

For the 2 casting cost he may not able to take much damage but he can deal it out. Its biggest drawback is that it is worthless against first strike, but this set has a lot of back end strengtheners.

This is one of those back end strength boosters I just mentioned. And as a quick strength boost using its flash ability I’ve used it a few times to ward off Ghost Flames and Fatal Attraction

White's BEST removal in a long time not only removes a nasty attacker or blocker but allows you to scry to set up the next few cards as well. No downsides to this card at all.

If it came down to a choice between two cards in white, this card would be given a mark against it for the high casting cost of 4 but with the easy suspend, flying, and flanking I would choose it easily over say a Patrician’s Scorn or Saltskitter

A 3/3 creature is O.K. but with the higher casting cost of 5 and 2 ways to remove it either with enchantment or creature removal I may use it just to fill a slot to 40 cards.

This is another of those back end boosters I spoke about in White. Playing it as a face down 2/2 creature only to morph it into an enchantment and lose all of its combat damage is pretty cool. And it’s a good way to keep your Force of Savagery

isn’t in play you can do it again with the flashback cost. Yes, the flashback costs more but if it is a game winning move it is more than worth it. I have never used the cycling ability of this card, as it is more useful played than discarded for a card. [Editor's note: As I said in another article recently, that's not always necessarily the case. Hop on the forums to discuss this and all the other ideas in this article!]

This card would have been much better if they reduced its cost by 1 and gave it defender but as long as you can remember to attack and then play a creature in your second main phase it could be useful. But don’t expect your opponent to do the same when he can remove a blocker for just playing a creature

Samite Censer-Bearer
Would I draft it? Yes
Will it make my main Deck? Maybe
As a one drop the Censer-Bearer isn’t bad but I see it used more as a chump blocker than for it’s actual ability.

I hope this breakdown helps you in a draft and if you disagree with any of my views, well that is what the reader forums are for. Until next time, may all your draft rares be MUCH better than the Steamflogger Boss
