Drafting Commons in Black Future Sight - Arthur Childers (6/14/2007)

So far I have done articles on the white and green commons and how I feel about them in the draft format. I’ve enjoyed discussing my opinions and reading others in the forums and look forward to reading more.

Mr. Crenshaw has done a good job also discussing how the cards in this block will play in a limited vs. constructed format. But I am dealing strictly on how I look at them in a draft as commons are the cards you are going to be seeing the most of as the packs go around. In an 8 person draft there will be at least 24 rares and 72 uncommons, but 288 commons so they will make a BIG difference in any deck and with the ability to have more than 4 of any one card in a draft format there are some cards that I want to see a few of in my deck

Augur Of Skulls
Would I draft it? Yes.
Will it make my main deck? Yes.
As with all the Augurs, the ability during upkeep only will have to be played with some strategy. It can help you reach Hellbent or deplete your opponent’s hand. The regeneration ability is great early game defense.

Cutthroat il-Dal
Would I draft it? Yes.
Will it make my main deck? Yes.

Sideboard ? Always
While I might put in 1 as a space filler the drawback of not being able to deal with green make it a waste of space against a mostly green deck. I realize green is only 1 of the 5 colors but the high casting cost along with the emptying of my graveyard make this one of my least favorite removal cards.

This is one of the better slivers in this block, if you can get the ability to stack early you can get through with 1 or 2 to do some quick damage. In a block constructed sliver deck it will just be nasty.

This is one of those “it was laying there in plain sight” cards that you have to remember as well as your opponent, if you’re running this card you should have black creatures but if you have splashed in another color (Which happens a lot in draft) you have to remember it also. Sometimes it may be necessary to play a little creature just to have it removed to get around your own enchantment.

Madness 3B(If you discard this card, you may play it for its madness cost instead of putting it into your graveyard.)

Would I draft it? Yes
Will it make my main deck? Yes
As easy creature removal, a -3/-3 for 3 is a good thing as always. Cycling is good if you need it over the removal ability ( yes I know in white I said a card is better played than cycled and I still believe that but if it comes down to a card I know I need I may cycle). The only drawback is the madness cost is more than the hardcast cost but to use it as an instant might prove useful for a 4 casting cost.

This is not all that useful a card – you make him discard a card and place it third from the top (Long Range Plans anyone?). The only upside would be to see their hand in case you have a card that can remove a different bomb from their hand or deck.

Mass Of Ghouls
Would I draft it ? Maybe
Will it see my main deck? Only to fill a slot
The full art card in black is the Mass Of Ghouls, a 5/3 creature for a 5 casting cost. If you pull this creature early you won't have the mana to cast it and in a draft the early game is important to not only set up your defense but to start a good offensive also, this card is better mid to late game but is still very susceptible to Ghostflame or other quick removal. Would have been much better with 1 less casting or as a 5/4

Would I draft it? Yes

A 3/3 for 3 is always a good thing but the only drawback is his Scry ability. Sometimes you do have to look at the card and place it on the bottom and pull the next card hoping the converted casting wont be more than 3. ( I actually pulled this off 3 times in one game, scrying the top card, placing it on the bottom, and then revealing the next card for less than 3 casting cost.)

On the whole, black has some good abilities with the commons, my favorite being the Deepcavern Imp
