Drafting Commons in Green Future Sight -
Arthur Childers
(5/27/2007)
In this, my second article on the commons in the new set, I am going to take on Green. Green is the toughest color in the commons, as it has really no downside cards. If I decided to go with Green as I have seen many people do, I have seen it work well with White, Black, and Blue, I haven’t tried to do the Gruul combination of Red-Green yet, but it should really be possible. I will spoil something early. In my previous article I had ‘would I draft it’ and ‘will it see my main deck’ for each common – the answer to all of them will be yes for Green.

Would I draft it? Yes
Will is make my main deck? Yes
In a draft you don’t often go for really high casting cost cards, but with this card you can get an extra land early and if it is the late game you can sacrifice an unused land for card draw, which is good if you have just Scryed as you have loaded your next draw.
Kavu PrimarchKavu Primarch

Set: Future Sight Cost: 4 Color: Green Type: Creature Sub Type: Kavu Rarity: C Number: 128 Artist: Kev Walker Power: 3 Toughness: 3 Text: Convoke (Each creature you tap while playing this spell reduces its total cost by 1 or by one mana of that creature's color.) Kicker 4(You may pay an additional 4 as you play this spell.) If the kicker cost was paid, Kavu Primarch comes into play with four +1/+1 counters on it.
Would I draft it? Yes
Will is make my main deck? Yes
A 3/3 for 4 isn’t a bad thing in draft. But by the time you have out the mana to hard cast him without the kicker, most times you will have the kicker cost covered by your creatures. Just be sure you can survive at least one attack if you leave him as your only open blocker by tapping all the others to convoke
Llanowar AugurLlanowar Augur

Set: Future Sight Cost: 1 Color: Green Type: Creature Sub Type: Elf Shaman Rarity: C Number: 129 Artist: Tsutomu Kawade Power: 0 Toughness: 3 Text: Sacrifice Llanowar Augur Target creature gets +3/+3 and gains trample until end of turn. Play this ability only during your upkeep.
Would I draft it? Yes
Will it make my main deck? Yes
As a 1 drop the 3 toughness is enough to block most small attackers in the early game. In the late game if you have a flyer or a creature with shadow or one you have buffed up with an enchantment, the +3/+3 boost can easily administer the coup de grace (for those who don’t understand French he can open a can of I Win). [Editor’s note: The Augur also gives trample, which can easily turn the tide of a game in your favor.]
Llanowar EmpathLlanowar Empath

Set: Future Sight Cost: 4 Color: Green Type: Creature Sub Type: Elf Shaman Rarity: C Number: 130 Artist: Warren Mahy Power: 2 Toughness: 2 Text: When Llanowar Empath comes into play, scry 2, then reveal the top card of your library. If it's a creature card, put it into your hand. (To scry 2, look at the top two cards of your library, then put any number of them on the bottom of your library and the rest on top in any order.)
Would I draft it? Yes
Will it make my main deck? Yes
As a 2/2 for 4 casting cost he’s not someone who would be considered a heavy hitter or good defender, but with his scry/put into hand ability he helps you get ahead in creatures on your side of the board. With only 1 green in his casting cost it makes him more versatile to be used with other colors also.

This is not only a good back end but a good all over strength/toughness booster, once again with only 1 color specific mana needed it is a very versatile card. I really don’t see much use in the suspend ability as it gives your opponent the opportunity to remove your creature from play before it gets the aura and then you’d have no choice but to attach it to one of his creatures or hope he don’t have one for it to just go away.

This card can be used very effectively in the early game to knock out an enchantment/artifact or give you a life advantage, either way it’s a win/win situation. On a personal note I did see someone in the release events put 3 of these on a Coalition RelicCoalition Relic

I was glad to see this creature, even with the high 5 casting cost I know he will end up a staple in my Fungus deck. With Sporesower Tahllid and this bad boy you will be making saprolings every turn for every fungus you have.

As a quick 2 drop he is a good defensive creature, as your opponent will have to think twice about attacking with any creature (unless it has shadow). However, at the same time you will have to be careful in how he blocks, do you use it now or save it in case of a heavy hitter later? With a few Wrap In VigorVigor

Will it make my main deck? Only if I had slivers from the rest of the set available.
The Green Sliver in the set is a weaker 1/1 but it brings back an old mechanic in the form of poison counters. My biggest problem is while they brought back this mechanic they didn’t bring back the card that would allow you to remove poison counters also. I remember many a game back in Ice Age and 4th edition where it was a race to see who could get poisoned/unpoisoned first.

The card bringing up the rear in green is a good Hail Mary card, chump block all his creatures on an attack and when he is all blocked regenerate yours to lead an attack next turn. Once again a solid, versatile card with only 1 colored mana needed to cast it.
So as we see Green can work well with any color, it’s almost like the seasoning in a good soup. I have done green many times and one of my favorites is the Thornweald ArcherThornweald Archer
