Drafting Commons in Lorwyn - Black - Arthur Childers (4/3/2008)

I didn’t save Black until last on purpose. I never set out to discriminate against any color. One thing I do have to say about black and red is that I don’t see either color played by itself in a Lorwyn only draft. This has changed with Morningtide

This is a good early blocker and the regeneration for treefolk is good also. A 3 cost for each is good but getting it out early may tie up a bit of mana to keep the ability available

Would I drat it? Only as a last resort
Usefulness 2
A 6 casting cost for a 4/1 (possible 5/2 after winning a clash) is not the best of creatures. To add to the high cost, it can't block and a low back end defense make this a card I wouldn’t jump to draft.

It's good to give a creature a -1/-1, but to use this to kill a larger creature is a stretch. One of the removal spells would be cheaper than trying to use this ability, but a 2/2 is always a good flying blocker

He’s a 2/2 for 2 which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but the only reason I'd play him was if it would empty my hand. I don’t want to have to discard a card when one of my creatures goes to the graveyard. I personally prefer Grave Pact

A 3/3 for 7 with one color specific is okay but not the best for that much mana. The Evoke ability to make an opponent discard 2 is okay, but if you are going strictly for the discard stick with the Merfolk.

A removal spell with no drawback except that the other creature has to be less than 4 toughness. But for a 2 casting with one color specific you can most times even cast 2 of these easily to get rid of big creatures or wait until after combat to make sure the threats are removed.

A 1/1 flyer for 1 is always a good first drop but the only downside is that it can’t block. One time I had an opponent draft about 5 of these only to have 3 out on turn 3, I was so praying for a creature with reach or a flyer of my own.

Quill-Slinger Boggart
Would I draft it? Yes
Usefulness 4
A 4 casting cost with 1 color specific for a 3/2 isn’t bad, but with the number of Kithkin decks around with this set it is a good thing to make your opponent absolutely sure he wants to cast that next Kithkin.

The only reasons this got a 4 and not a 5 is the higher casting cost but if it didn’t have the clash/lifegain possibility I’d probably put it at a 3 and not a 4. Still a good piece of removal in the set
