Drafting Commons in Lorwyn - White - Arthur Childers (2/12/2008)

As I write this everyone will have begun to draft Morningtide

as the new set has come out and I hope to have a lot more cards on the site soon.

The purpose of these articles once again is to break down the commons from the new set and give my opinion as to how they stack up in the draft format. I recently had a friend ask me about certain cards and how they did in constructed, unfortunately I don’t do too many constructed decks for competitive purposes I still prefer drafts.

So now this time I will be deconstructing White, once again I will offer my humble but lovable opinion (but whenever there was a cry for help, whoops old cartoon flashbacks) as to whether or not I would draft it and its usefulness on a scale of 1 through 5.

Usefulness 4.5
As a 2/2 for a 3 drop it’s a useful card but having a small flyer sometimes will make a difference in the early game. Its changeling ability to power many abilities (including the kinship abilities in Morningtide

Cenn’s Heir
Would I draft it? Yes
Usefulness 4
As a 2 drop for a 1/1 he’s not all that good, his +1+1 for each other attacking Kithkin won’t make a big difference in late games. But with all the other small quick cast Kithkin he quickly becomes a rally point for the small white creatures and changelings. My opinion, block him fast and hard before you can’t block him at all.

Would I draft it? Only as a filler
Usefulness 1
I’m sorry but as a 0/3 for a 4 drop I don’t find this card too useful in either attack or defense. Its Evoke ability to prevent 3 damage for 1 white is a much better use for this card.

As a one drop for one this will always make a good chump blocker. People will always use a big creature to block him in the late game. I always find a good way to get rid of the Changeling Titan

As I said a 1/1 for a one drop is always good, what makes this card a solid 5 is it’s ability to tap another creature for one white. More often than not the ability of this card will be more useful than using it to attack or block unless you are using it to pump up Cenn’s Heir.

Giants run rampant in Lorwyn and most of them have red in their casting costs so this giant is good as it powers/is powered by giant’s. In your giant deck he’s one more giant, against other giant decks he has mountainwalk to run over them.

A 2/2 for a 2 drop isn’t all that bad but its useful only if you aren’t playing it on second turn to lend another creature a +1/+1 until end of turn. This card would be a solid 5 if he had flash.

I would have given him a higher usefulness rating if only his toughness wasn’t so low for a creature who can block more than one attacker. The only way to make him worthwhile is to block more than one creature and hope his first strike can take them out before they can take him out.

Would I draft it? Usually but it has to be a late pick
Usefulness 4
2/4 for a 4 casting cost is not that exciting. But if you can win the clash, a 3/5 will be better. It’s all a bit of a gamble with clash.

A casting cost of 5 for 3 life and to give a creature flying is OK and the return ability is good but with so many creatures that fly at a less than 5 casting cost I don’t see this card all that useful except for the life gain if you need it. [Editor’s note: I can be used to win clashes, but is it really worth it? I doubt it.]

Another Kithkin with an ability that helps others. If he attacks and wins the clash he can give one of the other creatures double strike. [Editor’s note: He can also give it to himself if need be.] He may not survive the attack but he can make one of the other creatures maybe live to fight further.

OK these are my views and opinions for the white cards out of Lorwyn. Do you agree/disagree? Meet me on the forums and lets talk about them
