Drafting Commons in Morningtide 1 - Arthur Childers (4/12/2008)

If you’ve read my other articles, you’ll know I mentioned the problems with drafting a smaller set like Coldsnap and Morningtide
Morningtide

. Since this is a smaller set I’ve decided to split the commons into 3 sets of 20 cards instead of doing 5 different articles for this set so they will just be in alphabetical order instead of according to color.

So here we go with the first 20 commons in the set and as before I’ll rate if I would draft it and the usefulness on a scale of 1 – 5

Ambassador Oak

Usefulness 4.5
A 3/3 for 4 casting cost with 1 color specific mana is a great drop but the extra ability of getting an extra creature is a good thing. The token comes in especially good for championing other, bigger creatures.

Usefulness 5
All the Bannerets are going to have a usefulness rating of 5, anything that reduces casting costs and stacks to reduce it further will always be a good thing. The worse I have ever seen this abused was drop the Banneret turn 2 and in turn 3 drop 3 Order of the Golden Cricket

and start flying over to smack me for 6 points per turn on turn 4

Brightsoil Druid
Would I draft it? Probabaly Not
Usefulness 2
A 1/2 for a 2 drop is O.K. but the ability of adding 1 G to your mana pool for 1 life is not the best since there are so many other mana makers in green as it is.

See, another Banneret that will stack to give you faster Treefolk and Shamans. Add to it a 1/3 body and it is great.

Not only does this Banneret have the cost-reducing, but it has an extra reinforce ability also which makes up for it only being a 1/1

Usefulness 4
A 2/2 flyer for 3 isn’t bad but you can also use it for two +1/+1 counters as an instant for 3 mana can sometimes turn the tide even more.

Burrenton Shield-Bearers
Would I draft it? Maybe
Usefulness 3
The 5 casting cost with 1 color specific mana is a drawback, but giving another creature (or itself) a +3 toughness when it attacks is okay. There are many other Kithkin I’d draft over this one unless there is a Banneret or two in play.

A white removal spell? Yipee! The only issue is that you have to be fairly heavily tribal for it to do much more than hit for 1 or 2.

Usefulness 4
A flash in 2/2 flyer is good for 3, but the secondary ability that allows you to look at another players top card is next to worthless. It would have been better if it allowed you to put it on the bottom of the library if you chose to.

The only reason this didn’t get a 5 was the higher casting cost of 4, if it had been tribal and one of the Bannerets could reduce the casting cost it would be much better, as it is card draw, which is always a good thing.

A modern giant Growth will give you an instant +3/+3 until the end of turn but if it is an even trade off you can use reinforce instead to stay alive and get a +1/+1 counter too.

A reprint of an old favorite of mine a 2/3 for 2 color specific mana is great in a single color deck. Throw in an Obsidian Axe or two and he gets real big real quick.

Usefulness 4
A 3/5 for 5 casting isn’t bad especially with only 1 color specific mana. Using its ability to winnow out your lands from your deck will help you get to your creatures and spells faster

Fencer Clique

Usefulness 3
A 3/2 flyer is good – a 4 casting cost with 2 color specific is its only drawback. Its ability to bounce back to the top of your library is good if you can use it to neutralize a threat and then bounce it back once damage is on the stack only to recast it next turn.

Would I draft it? Not as a first choice, maybe only in later packs
Usefulness 3
As a 0/0 creature for 3 its only saving grace is that you can pay 1 generic and a green to go look for a land to put into play. But after two lands it is gone. Use it once and then save it as a chump blocker and once damage is on the stack use it again for the other counter.

I rated this a little more useful than the Fertilid

for one reason, with it you can kill any other creatures that have a 1 toughness. Just make sure you don’t decimate your own ranks as well.

Final-Sting Faerie
Would I draft it? Yes
Usefulness 4
This is a play only in your second main phase creature to take out any big hitter that was used to block your creatures this turn. (Except for Chameleon Colossus
