Drafting Commons in Morningtide 2 - Arthur Childers (4/28/2008)

As I explained in the last article, since this is a smaller set I decided to break the commons into 3 instead of having 5 articles of shorter length. The last article dealt with the cards Ambassador Oak

Would I draft it Maybe
Usefulness 3
A 2/2 for 3 is a good middle of the road creature but his ability to deal 4 damage to each creature blocking it if it wins a clash is much more useful. The only drawback is winning the clash each time.

can accelerate your mana to play out Elementals but is this one really worth it? A 6/6 for 6 that can only attack if the defending player controls an island? Yes you can remove a +1/+1 counter from it to make one of your opponent’s lands an island, but there are a lot of merfolk to change land types too. If you decide to run this get some of them instead of losing the counters.

Oh yeah just what goblins needed – a way to pop out faster than pimples on a teenager working at a fast food restaurant. Elves vs. Goblins was a good idea for a 1 on 1 fight and I would have LOVED to see a way to accelerate Elves but that would be overkill to say the least.

Game-Trail Changeling
Would I draft it? Yes
Usefulness 3
This is one of my favorite changeling cards as I get to use my Pottsylvanian accent to say it is Moose and Squirrel. (And if you understand the reference you must have graduated from Wossamotta U). Seriously though this card is good as a changeling and good power/toughness the only drawback s the higher casting cost but with green mana acceleration it’s not that big an issue.

3 mana to enchant a land to have it render a creature unable to block. Hmmmmm…let me think, with the Kithkin, Rogues and Goblins and even Elves popping out so fast a single creature being unable to block isn’t that much of a bonus and having to tie up a mana to do it is even worse.

As a surprise card this is great it can pump your creature up just enough for it to survive or let it get around Deathtouch for 1 red. I find cards like this are a great reason to draft the Vivid Lands if you’re doing any type of Lorwyn/Morningtide

A 3/1 for 4 casting cost isn’t that good but the same card with 1 less isn’t bad. If you’re running a heavy faerie/rogue/changeling deck you can get prowl costs off quite easily.

A 4/4 that can become a 5/5 with trample if it attacks alone? This still wouldn’t entice me to draft it even with a lower casting cost, as it is it costs way too much for a single attacker, and with the Sunrise Sovereign

It’s a middle of the road power/toughness with reach to swat small faeries and rogues from the sky, but its triggered ability is even better. If you’re drafting Green you’re surely going to draft some elves along the way (Even if your name isn’t Shirley) and the more you draft with this guy the more flyers you can take down

I rate this a 4 as long as you can use the Prowl cost otherwise it would drop to a 3. But if you can reduce the casting cost by half and draw a card then sign me up.

Usefulness 3
This is a common garden variety 2 cost counterspell which seems to be a staple for magic, as Ravnica rotates out it almost seems obligatory that they put in another. However this counterspell has one major drawback – it can’t counter creatures, only instant or sorcery spells.

Two thirds of the way through and Shadowmoor is on the horizon with many new mechanics and abilities, which I will walk through sooner than I have with the last two sets.

O.K. so now it is your turn – which common cards do you look for in a draft? Which ones do you hope won’t get played against you? Sign up and sign in on the message boards and make your voices heard.
