Drafting Commons in Red Future Sight - Arthur Childers (6/22/2007)

Okay, so far I have done white, green, and black. Now comes one of the two colors I have not drafted that much, but I do have my opinions on the red cards and I invite you to share your views, opinions, and criticisms (as long as they are done in a polite manner – no name calling please) on the forums which are linked at the end of each article.

I would draft this card as an early blocker. If I can get out a small 1 drop on my first turn and they don’t, it may be possible for me to inflict a point of damage to allow the Bloodthirst ability to trigger. In mid to late game he just becomes a cheap chump blocker

A 2/1 for 2 is pretty good but the Augur’s abilities once again have to be taken into account. In a draft format where you can have more than 4 of any card in your deck I have seen this used effectively in a red/white draft with the entire block, the person playing it used a Dawn Charm

To give a creature +2/-2 and it survive it already has to be a big creature. If I have a creature with a toughness of 5 I want to keep it. The best use for this card I’ve seen is to once again enchant your opponent’s creatures to give it lethal damage.

Will it make my main deck YES !!!!!!! [Editor’s note: Ditto here]
As you can see I’m rather excited about this card. This is one of those cards that can be used in any deck, any color. You can play it for the 3 casting cost as a morph creature and then just discard a card to morph it. And if it is the last card in your hand the Hellbent ability kicks in giving it a +2/+2. If there’s no good card in your color in the pack you have and this card is there, draft this card!!! [Editor’s note: And again. I think he’s serious here folks.]

The echo on this card requires black so if you don’t have a way to make black it is a one turn wonder. If you are running red/black (Rakdos comes back) its pump ability is really good to block a big creature then pump for enough to kill it. (Gonna pump YOU UP!! sorry, old Saturday Night Live Skits are running rampant today). [Editor’s note: It’s party time! Excellent! Goodness I just dated myself.]

Would I draft it? Only late in the draft
Will it see my main deck? Maybe to fill a slot
The scry ability to stack your deck is usually a good thing but to use it as direct damage to your opponent is a good thing only if you have some higher casting cost spells/creatures. In a draft you try to go for a quick kill and the higher casting cost of this and having to find other high cast cost cards make this a less desirable direct damage card than say Ghostfire

Pop Quiz Hotshot! How many suspend cards does red have in commons in this set BZZ!!!! Times up, ZERO is the correct answer so the power boost for removing a time counter will only be helpful if you have drafted other colors that have suspend on them – yes Red does have some suspend at the uncommon and rare levels but as you are going to have more commons this is what I focus on.
