Worldwake Prerelease -

[Editor's note: For some reason I found this article in my Spam folder - that's why it is insanely late.]
This weekend was a blur of activity for me, I went to Schaumburg, Illinois Friday night (one of the few times I’ve skipped FNM). I took a friend for a belated birthday present to go see Medieval Times. I sat in the section where I got to cheer for the Green Knight (sometimes it is more fun to cheer for the bad guy). Saturday I was looking forward to the prerelease events with Worldwake as it had been a long cold bleak January here in central Illinois and at least this was something to look forward to.
I received my packs (3 Zendikar and 3 Worldwake) and began to sort them out. In the first pack saw one of my favorite uncommons, Vampire Nighthawk. You can imagine my surprise when I popped pack 2 and found a second one. Then I thought I would need CPR when my third pack found a THIRD Vampire Nighthawk (what are the odds?). I knew I was going to be playing black for sure with Hideous End, Disfigure, and Mire Blight to help with removal. At this point I was seriously considering Blue as a second color as a Foil Archive trap was in one of my packs and any card that can take 13 of 40 cards out of a deck is a good thing in limited events. However this was not to be the case since my red had Seismic Shudder, Mark Of Mutiny, Inferno Trap, Punishing Fire, and Hellkite Charger. Team these with Mordant Dragon, Tomb Hex, and 2 Dead Reckoning from Worldwake and I had some pretty good power, reomoval, and return abilities going. I added a few midrange creatures, artifacts and other spells to have the following deck
Artifacts
1 Spidersilk net
1 Trailblazer Boots
Red
1 Sesmic Shudder
1 Punishing Fire
1 Goblin War Paint
1 Hellfire Mongrel
1 Mark Of Mutiny
2 Goblin Roughrider (a 3/2 for 3 isn’t bad at all)
1 Slaughter Cry
1 Cosi’s Ravager
1 Inferno Trap
1 Mordant Dragon
1 Hellkite Charger
Black
1 Pulse Tracker
1 Disfigure
1 Mire Blight
1 Ruthless Cullblade
1 Scrib Nibblers
3 Vampire Nighthawk
1 Hideous End
2 Dead Reckoning
1 Tomb Helix
7 Swamps
7 Mountains
A few thoughts on some of the cards for Worldwake, Dead Reckoning is a great card if you're far enough ahead to skip a draw. They may have used a card to remove your Dragon from the field but with Dead Reckoning you can have it back next turn and still have it deal its damage to another creature. I once used Punishing Fire on one of my own creatures (Goblin Roughrider) to put it in the graveyard only to return it to the top of my deck to kill a creature with pro red. One of the cards I really hated playing against (and I only had to play against it in game 1, which I lost) was Strength of the Tajuru, I’m just glad I had removal in my deck. I ended up placing second in the main event and in the packs I received I did pull the new Jace, which was a happy bonus.
We were able to play a booster draft in the next game and I drafted a few cards I had not played with or against in the main event and I’d like to talk about a few of them here:
Worldwake Commons
Explore: excellent in the early game if you have an extra land in your hand but even in the late game if you don’t have an extra land the card draw is a bonus in green where it has usually been a province of blue to draw extra cards
The Zendikons: 1 for each color that makes your land not only a creature but if the creature goes to your graveyard you can at least get the land back, hopefully taking out one of their creatures on the way
Graypelt Hunter: as a common with a 4 casting cost its trample is nice especially if you can back it up with Join the Ranks, which puts two 1/1 Soldier Ally creature tokens on the battlefield which effectively binds the Soldiers and the Allies together in this set.
Ruin Ghost: This is THE card to have with landfall, there is already a combo out there which will give you infinite landfall with a Plains (Lotus Cobra, Tideforce Elemental, and Ruin Ghost) this card is going to be a favored uncommon for sure.
Bestial Menace: I really like this card as you get 3 creatures for a 5 casting cost, the biggest thing that this card needs to move it from a good uncommon to a GREAT uncommon would be it to be an instant.
The last card I want to comment on that I played with in the draft which I thought was an awesome card is Dragonmaster Outcast, a 1/1/ for 1 is nothing new but his ability to bring in a 5/5 dragon each turn is going to turn him into the biggest lightning rod in the set
