CardShark Content - Beatdown Bedford Crenshaw (10/17/2004)

This is my favorite time of the year. Not only is there new Penguin Christmas merchandise, it is also the time of Sealed Deck PTQs with the new block. Each have their own intricate ways. Here are the ones I have gained for use in the new PTQ Nagoya setting.

1) Limited attendance
Attendance for the first two weekends is down from last year. This is typical for PTQs that lead to non-North American Pro Tours. Asian ones in particular have lesser attendance. This may be your best chance to Top 8.

Don’t underestimate this dirty rat. It is not hard for him to flip over to his “Hero” form. If you have no blockers, he can damage you for 4, which is not bad in a format filled with smaller creatures. Also, he can create a perennial blocker against your troops, or even use your best creature against you.

Don’t make the same mistake I made. I thought this card was a creature my opponent had, instead of a creature enchantment. It looks like a creature. I could have won, but instead lost to this. Don’t make the same mistake I did. This is especially a problem if your opponent does not lay out his creatures neatly, which was the case of my opponent. In similar fashion, Soul of Magma

can easily look like a global enchantment.

4) Know your TO’s
Not all tourney organizers are equal. Some establish late penalties if you aren’t there by a certain time, even if the registration isn’t meant to be ended until later. Others have uneven judging or don’t even bother enforcing their own rules, which was my experience in Chicago this past weekend.

was a friend of mine. This is no worldly tutor. Half the time I or my opponents used the card, we ended up not getting any creature to use. And when we did get a creature, it was not one that did us any particular good. It is, at best, a 23rd card to put in your deck, which probably means that the rest of your options was not particularly good. It is best to avoid this card.

Many of your opponents will have forests. If you have equipment that boosts power, the Jukai will definitely be worth its weight in gold, especially since it comes out first turn.

7) Sensei’s Diving Top
The power of blue is now available to all. In the CoK sealed environment, the ability to draw the right creature at the right time is crucial. This is especially true if you have a Brutal Deceiver

I saw a lot of people throwing them in their decks, and promptly lost. If you use the Tenderfoot, make sure you have plenty of ways to pump up his stats. Either use Equipment or use green cards like Serpent Skin

or Kodama’s Might. Is it worth it? Well, a 3/4 Double strike that becomes a 5/6 if blocked is nothing to dismiss.

, but that isn’t saying much. Most of the time, you would have been better served with a creature than this card, which can not eliminate opposing creatures. Unless you have lots of Splice cards, or creatures that love it when you play an arcane spell, you should try to find better alternatives.

I hope these tips will help you in your PTQ experience. Limited PTQs are always lots of fun, and are a great equalizer against constructed formats filled with expensive cards. Good luck.
