CardShark Content - Beatdown Bedford Crenshaw (2/3/2005)

This report includes both pre-releases in Indianapolis, the Jan. 22 and Jan. 29 prerelease. They really altered my opinion on this expansion. At every other pre-release I have gone to (and I have not missed one since my first one for VISIONS) I have played in a sealed deck event, and gotten the promo card for it. However, I had seen nothing that interested me in the set. Not the official previews on MTG.com, and not any spoilers on mtgsalvation.com or mtgnews.com. Plus, the sealed deck formats was going to be $30. Now, I can get boosters from my hometown dealers for $2.50 and tourney decks for about $8 or $9. When I looks at the potential prizes, it seemed smarter to just go ahead and do draft only.

There were over 280 players for the main event and early-bird flights. The boosters started at 12:45. My draft pod was comprised of some competent players. I was able to do some good rare-drafting and managed to cut off green pretty well. I went mono-green with this:

s (actually islands, as they had long ago ran out of forests)

My first match was against a guy who also drafted mostly-green, although he did have some white. In the first game I rolled over him. In the second we were told to evacuate the table as they had to use it for another sealed-deck flight. So we moved outside to the main corridor, which is popular because there people can smoke if they wish. I was going to lose by being decked, when we were found by the draft judge responsible for our draft. He told me to go ask Judah how much time was left for our draft. After a few minutes, Judah told us it should be over now. So I went backed and told the news, and managed to hold on to the end of turns, making the match 1-0, giving the win to me.

The second game I faced someone who went mostly blue. Between my two snipers I held his flyers down for a quick win. In the second game he made sure to counter my first sniper, but my second came thru, and once it did I won handily. I agreed to concede to my next opponent, so that I could go ahead and leave for home after we split the packs equally. (He needed the win because he was trying to win the “free events for a year” contest.)

While I did win with this, this was not a good deck and I was lucky to do as well as I did. The Marks did no good as my mana requirements were slight. Also, I had to put in my deck every green cards I had, so cards that weren’t that great, like the Harbinger and Blinding Powder

For the snow-day, the weather in Indianapolis was worse that the weather the previous weekend. I nearly fell on my, uhh…. posterior shall we say, 4-5 times, which caused me to wrench my back so badly that I felt it for the rest of the day. After dining on some Twisty Mac at the Hard Rock, I went in to draft. I was saddened by the lack of attendance. There was only one sealed deck event going on, and it only had 24-28 people. I once did a head count for the event as a whole, and I estimated about 50-60 people. Between the weather, and the fact that several surrounding areas had GP trials and PTQs, attendance was bad. Even the Terre Haute boys didn’t come out to support Vic. However, it meant that I had a much easier time to win, since the only player I recognized which was better than me (Judah) was a judge. Let me put it to you this way. In my first draft, I faced 1) a guy who only played for a week, 2) a ten year old, and finally, 3) a guy who had ¾ inch holes in h
is ear lobes, encircles by a metal ring of some sort in each lobe. It was impossible for me to rare draft, as I had two little kids on my left and the aforementioned holeylobed dude to my right. My deck:

s, and that was a disappointment.

I was able to enter another draft almost immediately. It was the first time I remember having two women in a draft pod. Once again, I was surrounded by rare drafters. I early chose to go black, and then red. However, by the middle of the second pack, I was not only cut off on both colors, I was also denied any decent cards from any other color as well. Things improved on the third pack, and I was able to make this deck.

The night before, I had written a review of red cards in BoK for Sligh. I gave the Recluse a D+. I realized that it is actually not that bad of a card, because unless your opponent has an instant in hand, you should have little to fear as the Recluse should almost always be able to attack, which is the main concern for Sligh. I should have given it a C+, if not a B-.

There isn’t much to say about the games I played with this deck. I played the holeylobed dude again, and then I faced his friend, the guy who lost to the 10 year old in the first draft and was wearing a toboggan in a room where temperature had to be 80 degrees F. After playing the deck, I think that there is a chance for a good suicide black deck in the works, as the Ogres and Demon

RANDOM BEATS:
1) Congrats on Vic Aldridge and the rest of Simply Magic for a smooth snow-day prerelease. The most fun I’ve had playing Magic in a long time.
2) I should have had someone take a picture of me with my camera, instead of trying to take it myself. I have an APS, and there was only one shot left on the camera. It was for the Cardshark T-shirt promotion. I ended up only getting the very top of the T-shirt and of course my entire face, showing every part of hair my razor missed on my face that morning. On that note…
3) Props if the guy who took my picture on the first prerelease actually sends it to prerelease (as of 1/30 it was not yet posted on Cardshark), and slops if he doesn’t send it
