CardShark Content - Beatdown Bedford Crenshaw (2/13/2006)

It’s that time again…time to review the new cards. As these are the cards I have the most experience with, we’ll start with the red and r/g cards of Guildpact.

Limited: C-
Overall: D
Even with bloodthrist, this is a weak card. Avoid.

Fencer's Magemark
Limited: B
Overall: C-
I learned to respect Magemark’s power at the prerelease. The aura is decent on its own, and with other auras your army could be frightening. But due to the historic weakness of creature auras, this is limited to Limited.

Ghor-Clan Bloodscale
Limited: C
Overall: D
Was the ability really so overwhelming that it had to be limited to once a turn? As is, it’s mindless filler.

Being able to Tim is always useful in Limited, and the ability to rescue the aura if playing Izzet is just gravy. In casual or tourneys, just play a Tim critter to begin with.

This is my favorite of the three red Guildmages made so far. Beyond giving Red a 2/2 for 2cc with no drawback, it gives Red something to do with excess land. Mono-green can find better creature pumpers. In Gruul the usefulness of both abilities, in particular the red ability, make it good.

was one of my first cards, and is still my favorite dual land. This is a reasonable replacement for that. Add to it some good artwork, and this is a very nice card. In Gruul decks you will almost always go ahead and pay the two life to go ahead and use it, as speed is what it’s all about.

IN CONCLUSION: There is some fun stuff here. Gruul is a definite force in Limited play, and mono-red got a couple of sweet cards, even if it only got 15 cards in this set, due to having two red guilds taking up red design space. All in all, I’ve seen worse sets for red.
